Recently , here in Farmington, Mi, we had the weather warmed up very quickly from below freezing to 55/58 degrees F in one day.
Huminity was also very high.
When I went to work on my car, I could not believe what I saw...(stored in an unheated garage)
The car was wet all over, water droplets formed on all steel parts, engine, aluminum F.I system, even the fiber glass in the engine bay was covered with water droplets. I have never seen anything like that.
I did wipe off the alum and other accessable areas. The next day a lot of the un-painted parts were rusted. Even some of the alum I could not reach, was oxidized. My exhaust manifolds were rusted so bad, that I removed them from the engine to have them coated.(Was planning on doing that anyway, but not right now)
In the corners of the manifold and at the alternator mounting, the casting was not rusted at all. Why ? Maybe it was coated better than the rest of the casting.
I now have to find the best coating, any suggestions ?
I can now understand, why restored cars, or cars being restored should be in a heated garage, to keep them from deteriorating in a short time. Mine started, and I am not even done...Even some of the underbody brackets, such as muffler mounting brackets, which are new, painted (very lightly), starting to rust.
I will post a few pic's to show the manifolds...
Whats the best coating ?
Rainer
