If you had it rebuilt, it holds 9 quarts.

Sorry about the info, a 62 aluminum transmission holds 9 quarts, not sure if 57 holds that much, but probably more than 4. I'll check when I get home this afternoon if nobody else has chimed in by then.

          Picture please Roy

I have a dip stick pictured like the one in the post. I am told it is the wrong one for a 55. I now do not know what to look for. If you have a picture showing the handle as well i would appreciate seeing it. Thanks in advance

9 quarts is correct and the stick is correct, yes some people think the 53 to 54 Corvette is correct (same as early 6 banger Car )but 55 up Corvette and Car V8 are the same stick in most cases till the cast iron PG was dropped. 53-54 has a different reading . Don't think it's mentioned in the JM. As many things ant.
(by the way running about 1 quart low will not hurt the trans and stop the leaking and throw ups )

                You guys are GREAT!

I will definitely have the car up off the ground this time.......I don't want the thing to shoot out like a rocket.

I'm hoping the reason it is NOT engaging is because I don't have enough fluid. I sure hope you guys are correct about the 10 quarts. This trans was completely rebuilt before I installed it.

I will take a picture of the dip-stick and posted.

Thanks again.........I will keep you guys posted of my results. Right now I have to address the leaking and check linkage.

The 1957 Shop Manual says 4-1/2 quarts for a refill after normal change draining, the '57 Assembly Manual says 1.06 gallons (4 quarts) for plant fill, and the '57 owner's manual says 4-1/2 quarts for "sump refill" and 11 quarts for "total refill".

The 7-quart difference between "normal refill", "plant fill", and "sump refill" vs. the 11-quart spec is the fluid retained in the converter; the first three conditions all reflect a transmission that has been run previously (not a "dry" transmission).

                      Thanks John........

I wonder if the specs are the same for a '57 car????

I guess I will find out very soon-
