I have just purchased what was suppose to be a NOS D308R distributor cap with the PATENT PENDING script on the top but it does not fit my 67 327. The locating tab on the bottom of the cap is in the wrong place. It is opposite the hold down clip and should be between the clip and the window. When the cap is on the distributor the clips are not next to the area cast into the housing to hold the clips. Anyone ever see a cap like this or know what is is suppose to fit? Did any of the Vette fuel injection or transistor ignition systems use a special cap?
There is a good chance you got an Oldsmobile, Buick or Pontiac cap. The losations of the window and hold down clips vary between cars. There was several delco numbers for various GM and Ford cars
Kevin, I believe all '57 - '73 GM, American Motors, and IHC truck V-8's used essentially the same distributor cap. It has the locating tab in the right place for a stock '67 Corvette distributor. The special Delco GM caps that I have seen (such as the brown performance version with brass terminals, the dual window '62 Corvette cap, and the short tower FI/Oldsmobile cap) all had the tab in the same place.
Your new find sounds like one of the Delco caps sold in the aftermarket for non-GM applications. For example, Delco sold caps for Mercury marine engines that looked like a standard GM automotive cap on the outside.
i have the cap you are looking for. i am planning to put it on ebay in the next week or so. if your interested in buying it let me know before next week and i won't put it on.
