    61 radiator/body mounts

I own a 1961 corvette. There are stress kinks beginning to show in the fiberglass above the center of the front fenders. I was told by another C1 owner that this can be corrected by replacing the front body mounts under the radiator. I would like to know:

    1. what parts I will need
    2. exactly how to go about replacing these body mounts
    3. If replacing the mounts will correct the problem

Any help with this subject would be greatly appreciated.

    Bob,
Before you begin, do a little more investigation. Often, the problem is that the bottom of the rad support is rusting out. Since the rad support also serves as the front body mount, this causes the whole front end to droop. As it does, the fenders start to bow out and crack. You should be able to check by jacking up the car and crawling underneath. Use a mirror to look at the support. If it shoes signs of major rust (cracks, flaking, very thin) it will have to be repaired/replaced

      Rod,

Thanks for your response. If it is not rusted out then what? Replace the body mount?

Install a new mount kit under the radiator support. The rubber gaskets decay over time and cause the front end to droop. You can add shims to achieve any height you want. (within reason). Give the fiberglass a month or two to readjust to each addition. When it looks correct stop.

        Dale.
