Engine id-bad

Hi,

my Vette has lost it´s #-match engine in early 80´s. Now I maybe found it or not. This 327 engine is very good and dates are very close in inletmanifold and cylinder heads. Problem is that sometimes ago in the machine shop block is done desent way and allmost all info on the id bad has gone. In some article at Driveline they told some chemical way to get numbers visible for a short time. Does anybody remeber this or eaven better does anybody used this method?

There is another method that will show the numbers, if you heat the stamp pad area with a torch (Actelyene) to a red glow and let it cool down, the image of the stamp will appear on the area that was heated. It will not "Raise" to a measureable extent, but the numbers will be clearly visible on the surface of the cooled pad.

I was wonedering if you did this with intake on, and where do you apply the heat, ie..on the vertical portion or right on the pad. I am really interested in any details you might have. thanks
