Exhuast Manifolds - gasket for '65

I'd like to start by saying I know that the cars did not originally have exhaust manifold gaskets.

I had planned on removing the exhuast manifolds to replace a broken stud that connects to the exhaust pipe. I also need to replace the spacer. While I had them off I planned to clean them as well.

There are currently no gaps or leaks of any sort between the engine and manifolds right now with no gasket. If I remove the exhaust manifolds, is there any chance that they may not fit properly when I go to reinstall them. Would it be bad/good or have no effect if I used a gasket before reinstalling?

    Thanks
    Ryan

Removing and re-installing the manifold should have no effect, whatsoever, with respect to creating the potential for an exhaust leak. If you have no leak now, I fully expect that you'll have no leak after reinstalling.

I just did this on my car, and had the same concerns. Everybody told me I didn't need the gaskets, but I wanted to use them anyway to be doubly sure. Didn't use gaskets and didn't have any leaks. Started the car a few weeks ago and have run it half dozen times since. Few points:

        1. The gaskets you are looking for are only sold by Chevrolet. They only come with some intake manifold gaskets. They are not sold alone. I bought some header gaskets, and was going to cut them up. (Sell 'em to you cheap. Never opened the package.)

        2. Clean the manifold mating surface with a wire brush on an electric drill. Clean the head surface with a razor blade scraper.

        3. Torque to 30 ft/lbs.
