    66 Courtesy Lights

The under-dash courtesy lights are inoeprative due to the fact that the spring loaded contact posts in the sockets are stuck (corrosion I assume) and they do not move freely in and out. It doesn't appear as if the sockets can be removed without cutting the wire harness which I am reluctant to do. I can move the contact posts in and out with needle nose pliers after a liberal application of WD-40 but they will not return to the fully extended position on the power of the spring alone. Does anyone have a fix for this minor annoyance?

I had a similar problem with my 66. The switches can be removed without cutting the wires. If you remove the kick panels you can reach inside behind the switch and find the connector. It's a single wire system. Once you've separated the connector the switch can be removed from the outside. Then just remove paint or rust with wire brush and your back in business. Hope this helps. Thanks for the reply but it is the light bulb sockets under the dash I have a problem with, not the door jamb switches.

            Frank:

I had a similar problem on my 64. The lights would work periodically but most of the time, not at all. I also tried the needle nose pliers, tuner spray, etc. - no help. I bought new replacement type bulbs from LICS and never had another problem. The bulbs that were in there, while they fit, were a slightly different design and apparently did not make good contact.

Maybe you will get lucky and this will work for you.

I believe the switches are the same for 66 as my 67. You can remove the switch, use a small socket, without removing the wire first and without touching the kick panels, there should be enough slack in the wire for you to pull the switch out enough to view the connector and then unplug the wire plug. The plug may ask for some penetrating oil to free up any rust. Suggest trying to keep the wire out to make it easy to reconnect the plug, attach a string before unplugging it. Once unplugged the switch is free to be removed and cleaned, etc. Hope this helps. PS, if they are the original switches do clean them and put them back. Joel 67 L71

Re: 66 Courtesy Lights, BTW UPDATE

BTW, if the switch button is really frozen, unscrewing the switch will wrap up the wire. Make small turns, then turn the push button back thus keeping the button which has the wire attached in the same position and not wrapping up the connector/wire. Joel

While we're on the subject, what color/guage are the wires to the courtesy lights supposed to be, and what is the correct routing for them?

One of the previous owners of my '66 BB coupe "replaced" the original wires. Although 99.9% of the car is original and functional, the current baby-blue colored wires and the routing (especially the black tape) sure don't look factory spec...

                        Thanks,

My wiring consists of one orange and one white wire. The exposed part of the wire is about 2" long and goes into a taped harness.
