    66 headlight motor problem

    Hi,
It looks like my field coil in the motor housing maybe burned. I can still run the motor to turn the headlights down, but there is no power(spark, movement etc.) when I put power to the contact of the motor to run the headlights up.
The paper cover of the coil has a burned mark suggesting the underlying wire got to hot. There was a screw in the motor housing where the support bracket attaches. Looking in the screw hole it looks like there was contact from the screw tip and the coil ( probably shorting the coil to the housing ). Can a coil be shorted out so it only carries current in on direction( from the down power terminal ) and not the other ( the up direction power terminal )?
The housing can't be openned, and the coil removed. Is there any way to repair or do I need to look for a new motor. If I need a new motor where should I look for one?
    Thanks, Darwin

Don't have a comlete answer for you right now - but I have experienced the same problem. I have a coule old motors I will look into. Stay tuned - I'll write back when I find something out.

Hi. Did you remove the motor and try it without the load from the bucket? Also, check to make sure that the bucket isnt catching and placing an undue load on the motor, causing it to have an extra heavy load. If not, you might also burn out the next motor.

            Brandon,

I tested the motor out of the car and together and apart. I have no power going from the up terminal at the harness plug in to the motor. I suspect the field coil windings for this side of the circit are gone, but don't know if that can happen. Can a field coil only half work???

Darwin - please clarify "you have no power going into the up terminal from the harness" ? Are you getting power from the harness to the motor ?

                    John,
I am getting power from the harness to the motor. I have the motor out and have put power to each terminal with a battery charger. No motor movement, spark etc. when power is put to the up terminal. Motor works when power is put to the down terminal.

                        Darwin,

Yes, there are two different 12-volt lines into the motor and so there are two coils inside. It would be difficult for you to replace the coils.

If you have a multi-meter (or an ohm meter), you should measure from the motor housing to each of the 12-volt lines. There should read 'about' same. If one is bad then it would read an open. If there both read some low resistance (I can't remember what they should read but, it's less than 100 ohms) then your could be excessive load in one direction. Which I think would be somewhat unlikely. Are you sure that the gear assembly is OK?

                        Good Luck.

                        Gary

                            Gary,
Thanks for the response, I will test the resistence and let you know. The gear(Main) is not great, but turns and I reversed it 180 degrees.
