I have been tracking down a viberation in my mid year. I have replaced a half shaft u-joint, and both u-joints on the driveshaft. I had the driveshaft balanced, also. The yoke was scored, so I decided to remove the trans and replace the rear bushing and seal, along with putting in a new yoke, clutch, pilot bearing, etc. while I had it this far apart. I had read all the posts regarding trans removal, but still had a lot of problems.

I disconnected the trans, removed the shifter, and pulled the trans back as far as it would go, lowered the engine, but the input shaft still had about an inch more to go before it would come out. I turned the trans every which way trying to get a little more room, but no luck. I ended up having to loosen the bellhousing, and pull it downward, and then PRY the input shaft out of the bellhousing. What am I missing here?
When I put it back together, I am hoping for an easier way!

Also, I have a new throwout arm pivot ball that goes in the bellhousing, but it is not like the one that is in there now. Are there different types? It was in an envelope marked for a midyear that I bought a long time ago. The one in there now is one piece and is removed using an allen wrench. The new one goes in the hole, but there is no way to fasten it.

I would appreciate any help anyone can give, especially on the trans install.

Dropping the clutch housing with the gearbox is SOP, but there's no need to do any prying. That's how I've always done it. There were different bearings and forks depending on year and engine; '63s are unique. You might want to state the year and engine again. Joe can probably give your the correct part numbers for your application.

Did you have the rear yoke out when you pulled the tranny back? If not, that should provide the additional required clearance.

The year is a 64 and the engine is a 327. From past posts, and by reading the manual, I had the impression I was to remove the trans from the bellhousing to remove it. I did not think the bellhousing would pass by the clutch and pressure plate, that is why I unbolted the trans from the bellhousing. Also, I did have the slip yoke removed from the tailshaft.

It's been awhile, but I recall that you drop the bellhousing with the trans to the point where the input shaft clears the bellhousing, then shove the bellhousing back into place and finish removing the trans.

Reverse the procedure to install.

this is what I had to do to remove the transmission on my 66. Drop the trans and bell housing together but leave the bell housing in place once you clear the input shaft. The other thing mentioned here is that you must rotate the transmission about 90 degrees or so. This is in the GM Service Manual.

Be sure to drain the oil before you remove the trans. With the rear yoke removed it will spill oil if you tilt it the wrong way.

Also, be sure to refill the box with new GL-5 SAE 80W-90 or 75W-90 gear oil once it's reinstalled.

I think you'll find the information about rotating the trans 90 deg right in the service manual. I haven't removed a transmission in 25 years, but I remember that part well.
