    Re: crank bolt

the starter bendix is completely released when the starter is not spinning the engine so the starter has no drag on the engine. if you can not rotate the engine in the reverse direction with the damper bolt just install longer bolts in the 3 places that hold on the bottom pulley and use a bar between them to turn the engine. i always use red loctite on the damper bolt so that is why i have no problem turning the engine backwards.

      Clem:

On Werner's post, Tuesday, September 24, he asked "Why his engine was harder to turn backwards" (than forward, I assumed). The only thing I can think of is the starter drive still engaged in the flywheel when the engine has been turned in a clockwise direction and has not been fired. Many Chevy's, and I've had a 100 of them will leave the drive engaged in the flywheel if you activate the starter and not fire then engine. If you turn the engine clockwise it will kick the drive out. If you turn it counter-clockwise it will stay engaged and the flywheel will be forced to turn the started at a substantial mechanical dis-advantge to your effort to turn the crank.

If the engine is in the car, put the car in high gear and rock the engine back. Much easier than changing bolts in the pulley.

      My regards,
      Mike

        Re: crank bolt

he is trying to use a piston stop to find TDC and you have to turn it slowly with a bar or wrench so to do not do any damage to a piston.

          Re: crank bolt

Thanks man. I couldn't tell that from what I read on the posts. But why is it harder to turn backwards than forwards?
