Re: TO ANSWER MOST OF YOUR QUESTIONS

    Clem:

When you say "20 minutes idle is a long time", you bring me back to my original question: "are these engines, in ORIGINAL configuration, capable of idling indefinately,IN PLACE, and the temp. stabilizes somewhere between 180 and boilover".

The fan blade is about 1/2 in and 1/2 out of the shroud. The only shroud seal is on the bottom, between the engine cradle and the bottom trailing edge of the shroud. As I understand it, later models used some additional seals, but in '65, just the bottom seal was used. Anyway, the rad is well mated to the shroud, and any small gaps are probably insignificant.

Re: TO ANSWER MOST OF YOUR QUESTIONS

my experence has been that if a engine temps starts to climb after a while at idle just speeding up the engine(fan speed) should bring the temp down if nothing is wrong with the engine. in the 60s i had a brand new impala with factory A/C and it had a hand throttle to speed up the engine when setting still to prevent overheating. maybe the cooling engineering back in those days was not up to todays standards. even my new C-5 has a extra fan that comes on if the temp reaches 230 degrees or if you turn on the A/C

        I have the same cam

        Gentlemen,

I have the same cam (118R) in a '65 fuel car, rebuilt last year. 0.60 over, 10.3 measured comp., etc. It pulls vacuum consistent with what John H. has said, about 12" at 1000 or so rpm. My engine also heats up at idle, though it has never boiled over after a 1/2 hour of idling. It probably reached 220 deg after that time on a 90 deg day. I also have a new Dewitts radiator, Oliva fan clutch, 8" vac canister, etc. I do not think these cars will idle at 180 on a hot day after being rebuilt. Just my opinion. George
