    '68 L79 Spark Plug Recommendation

I am looking for a spark plug recommendation for a stock '68 L79. Actually, it does have a Pertronix in it, if that matters. This is for everyday driving and not a judging situation. TIA

Re: '68 L79 Spark Plug Recommendation

AC 45s always work best for normal driving in all small blocks, but AC no longer makes non-resistor plugs, so I recommend the NGK B4 or Denso W14-U. If you want to use resistor plugs AC R45s are fine, and you can cross these to many other brands, but be sure you get the equivalent to AC heat range "5". (The "4" in 45 means that it is a 14 mm thread.)

Thanks! I wondered what the 45 stood for. I'm pretty sure it has AC45s in it now. I was wondering if there might be something like a Rapidfire plug that would work well.

My recommendation: Champion J-12Y or RJ-12Y

Depending on your driving situation, RJ-14YC's may work better for you - the Champion 12's are equivalent to AC 44's, and the 14's are equivalent to AC 45's. I run either AC R45S or Champion RJ-14YC in both of my small-blocks ('69 Z/28 and '67 Corvette 327/300) and no longer have any of the fouling problems I used to have with AC 44's.

Roger, I'm an AC guy and I would use AC 45"s. The old AC plugs w/ the green rings are available and are a high quality plug.

I got mine at NAPA. I think it was $18 for a set of 8.

These are R45's with green lettering. On second thought probably not what you're looking for.

There's a set of original AC 45's with the four green rings on eBay right now - three days to go.

Re: '68 L79 Spark Plug Recommendation

I don't understand all this hysteria over spark plugs. AC 45 or 45S will work fine as will Champion J-12 or J-12y. I forget the Autolite number. They all work well in my experience. The tuning of your engine has far more to do with your engine running well than your plugs. If the spark and fuel are correct. the plugs will last a long time. Any of the name brands. Again, in my experience.

If it makes you feel better to go to E-bay and buy a set of "original" plugs for your car, go ahead. I buy mine from Wal-mart for about a buck apiece. I don't change them until they start missing at the speed I drive at. That means the plugs in my old cars are 10-15 years old because they don't get driven all that much. Something to think about!
