    1966 wiper motor

My wiper motor will not turn off unless I disconnect the ground wire at the wiper motor. The wipers have both speeds but when I turn the switch off the wipers stay in the slow speed. Thanks, Dave

SB a nice troubleshooting chart listing symptom and what/where to check in the wiper motor section of your '66 Chassis Service Manual.

      Dave:

Within the wiper transmission housing, there are 2 solenoids. One is for the washer pump, the other is to engage the parking mechanism. It is very likely that this parking solenoid is "open". Much less likely that the parking pawl is broken or missing. Try to shut off the wipers, and have a friend listen for a click---if you hear it, then that eliminates the solenoid as the problem. I recall that there are 2 very small springs which may be included in the park mechanism. If they are involved then check the exploded view in the Shop Manual to see if they are there.

Does the motor have to be removed to make repairs to the parking mechanism?

No. The entire transmission assembly is accessible while in place, after the front cover is removed.
