    Paint deductions question....

    Hi gang,
After some nudging, I've decided to get my car judged. It's an interesting car in that it's original owner (person I bought the car from) took exceptional care of the car over the decades and it's essentially the same car today as it was in 66. That's includes it's very-well-preserved original paint. One twist however, is that the owner had a 6 inch racing stripe added to the car not long after she purchased it from Clippinger Chevrolet. Racing stripe is still on it today. My question is how much paint deduction will occur because of the stripe when the rest of the car has all the hallmarks of very nice original factory paint???

    Matt,
The NCRS rules are tuff on stripes not original to the car........ It calls for a full paint deduction. I feel it should be only scored as damage to the body panels affected, but that's the rules. Sorry for the bad answer.

There are 4500 points scored in Flight Judging (points added for driving, battery cut-off, fire extinguisher, and NCRS Decal). You can loose a maximum of 270 points and still get a Top Flight award. Download the judging sheets at:

and do an assessment of your car. If paint is the only problem, then the car should do well.

I suggest you do MINIMAL prep (gently remove heavy dirt/ make sure the stamp pad is legible - again AVOID aggressive cleaning) and get the car judged at a chapter meet.

Adhere to the cleaning instructions for a BOWTIE car and first determine what you have, BEFORE making any changes. (See the 1953-1996 Judging Guide)

A full deduction on paint is 85 as I recall. 45 on originality and 40 on condition.

They are right full deduct whether it is a 1/16 pinstripe or full racing strip.

The JG says you must achieve 94 % to get top flight...but....if you get the 10 points of bonus allowed, then you can get top flight by losing 280 points which is 93.7 % of 4510 total points.

Which came 1st.... the chicken or the egg....Makes my head spin....Can anyone clarify this conundrum

              6 percent of 4510 is not 280

How many points can you lose with full bonus points to achieve Top Flight ?....are the bonus points included in the total score or only added after the judging deducts.

I really don't know how it works.

A stripe is a full paint deduction, and how much on a surviving original paint? full deduct too?

                        Ron,
It makes no difference when the paint was applied. Added stripes or numbers = full paint deduction. This is known as "The Bounty Hunter" rule.

Matt, can you post a pic of the stripes? Clippinger has deep history with corvettes, Bob Wingate's one-off cars, and involvement with James Garner's racing program... I'd be curious to see what they look like? I'd think there is a value to keeping them on the car over judging points.

I remember the famous California six tail light Corvettes Clippinger did for my friends in the Valley in '67, great cars, very distinctive, and they did lots for the beach boy crowd around there.

As bad as it would look sanding off the stripes and not refinishing would score better than left alone in flight judging. Not something I would do, but a fact. I suggest this car would do well in the bowtie judging as this would only be a partial defacing on each panel with stripes. The orignal paint would still be looked at as original with "damage".
