Part Found Under Car After Drive Help!

Took the '65/327 out for a 40 minute drive and found this part under the engine area after pulling in the garage. Looks like a 1" roll pin beveled on each end. The pin was not hot as it should have been after a long drive. The pin had a slight smell of motor oil put not real oily. Car runs great with no noticeable problems.

Please tell me I do not need this part!! Thanks!

    Larry,
Go check to see if both alignment pins for the bellhousing are still in the back of the block. If one is missing there is your answer. These pins are a tight press fit into the block and should not come out under normal conditions. Reinstalling (if this is what it is) should not be a problem. Bill

      Hello;
      Think Bill is correct.
If not please post a picture of the pin next to a ruler.

That's my guess too. Or it could have rolled out from under your tool box and is from another project?

I once had a 73 Corvette for three years before I noticed two bell housing to engine bolts missing!

Could it be a safety pin for an aftermarket knockoff wheel???

Can the pins be seen from the top or bottom?

I think that's too small if the picture below is the one you guys are taking about.

Larry what is the approximate diameter? The pin pictured below is about the diameter of a dime.

Is this a Fuel Pump Pivot Pin I Found?

This is an update from a previous post on an item I found under the car after a drive. I checked the fuel pump pivot pin hole and was able to pass a small wire tie through the hole. I do not know if the pivot pin is solid or hollow as I have never seen one. Attached is the best to scale photo I could take. The diameter of the pin is very close to #6 metric. This pin is beveled on each end so I am not sure how it was held in or if it is a fuel pump pin. Any idea what this is?

Keeping your related posts together. And no, that is not what the pivot pin in the fuel pump looks like, or at least what the original pivot pin in your pump looks like.

You've also asked this on the Corvette Forum. That thing has prob been sitting up in the frame of the car wedged in somewhere and finally came loose. Its from some repair years (maybe decades ago). If its not from knock off wheels or the bellhousing I would just put it away somewhere (the car's ashtray is a good place) and worry about something else...

Re: Is this a Fuel Pump Pivot Pin I Found?

                        Larry,
If you can pass a wire through the hole at the top of your fuel pump, the pin in question belongs in that hole. That is the pivot point for the fuel pump lever. One end rides on the camshaft and the other end lifts the diaphragm to pump fuel. And "yes" that pin is important. I have had several of these pins work loose (but never fall out) over the years. The replacement pumps seem to be worse about this than an original.
This can be repaired if the hole in the pump is not enlarged to much. Remove the pump, re-install the pin making sure it goes through the hole in the lever inside the pump. Test that it is correctly installed by operating the pump by hand. There should be no slop in its movement and it will take a fair amount of force to move the lever. The ends of the pin should now stick out approx. 1/16" on each side of the pimp housing. Using a good, stout vise clamp the jaws on each side of the loose pin and expand both ends at the same time.
I have done this several times with excellent results. Keep an eye on the pin for a while to make sure you have expanded both ends enough to retain it.
I am VERY surprised your motor would run with this pin missing. My guess is the motor was running on fuel in the float bowls only. I think you came close to walking! Bill

                          1) This pin looks too small to me to be a fuel pump pushrod pin.

                          2) Notwithstanding the above, if your fuel pump pushrod pin had come out, your engine would not be running.

Joe, Should I be able to pass a wire tie through the pushrod hole. Is the pin hollow?

Frank, I posted to get as many responses as possible. Not necessarily worried, just do not want the car to crap out on the busy California streets or freeways if I can avoid it!
