    Micro wheel weights

Another find in the old service station! I also grabbed a 45lb. bucket that are in oz./english marked but not with the grooved ends. Were they used by GM as well?

Looks like the Mother Lode, Kevin. Are these going to be for sale per chance? I'm about to buy new tires and would like to have some Micro weights to balance. Thanks,

      Re: Micro wheel weights

Original midyear weights had "wings" to them on the upper ends, and also had the ounces on each end and not ounces on one end and grams on the other. Stamped Micro in the middle of them. ARA

Hi Leif, There is no intent on using this post as a for sale ad, but for certain they will be available.

        Hi Ara, Check your PM.

This photo contains nothing but those with the wings. I separated them out of several hundred pounds of weights.

            Here's the latest picture.

I am trying to come up with a far price? Most weights appear to be new or in very good condition, some are used. I separated them last night and the most vs. least found is interesting, well to me....! I was told the larger/heavier weights are harder to find and that was proven. The most common sizes are .5,1.0,1.5 oz. There were very few 1.75,2.75. Also, there are many weights marked micro without the winged tips, but only available in the heaviest weights of 3.0 or higher. Wondering if they would judge ok?

This is a picture of weights from different makers, non micro. Who are they of use to? All weighted in oz. measurements.

                Kevin

Micro was not the only supplier of wheel weights for Corvettes in the midyear period. Others are commonly found. Attached is a picture of my 68's original spare tire that has a Micro and another manufacturers weight side by side on the tire. If the weights are given in ounces and that company was a supplier to Chevrolet they potentially could have been used on Corvettes of the period.

There was an article in the Restorer on wheel weights a few years back, it had examples from some of the other suppliers if I'm remembering correctly. You probably want to check it out.

                  Hi John,

Good info! I did receive a PM, informing me the same thing you're saying, that there were other suppliers. I don't recall seeing any with the "R" as seen in your photo in my boxes. All weights pictured are in oz. measurements. I'll try to locate the article in the Restorer, I have also heard about it but haven't read it yet....

Has the wheel in the photo ever been judged, if so any comments/notes/deducts on the non micro weights?

There has to be another couple hundred pounds sitting at the old garage.......

                  Thanks again for posting.

                    Hi Kevin,
Using Jeff Salz's RESTORER Index it appears the wheel weight articles were:
Wheel Weights, 31/3, Gary Beaupre (2005)
An Update on Wheel Weights, 32/1, Gary Beaupre (2005)
If you don't have access to these let me know and I'll scan them and send them to you.
                    Regards,

I've never had my car judged do I can't say what the judges reaction to the non-micro weight would be. It should be OK. The 14 in an oval is one of the other manufacturers shown in the Restorer article.

                        Re: Micro wheel weights

When judging I look for at least two wheels with weights, it helps if one of them is the spare. Now if the weight is in the exact correct spot I would never know. If doing a PV they had better be in the correct spot as a shimmy will certainly cause a PV failure.

Also, can't prove this yet, but I do believe there was a maximum number of ounces specified by GM allowed on a wheel. If the ounces went over the limit the tire was rotated on the wheel to use less weight.

I had five 63 wheels straightened by a local wheel shop. After painting and installing a set of Coker tires only two wheels needed weight, both were under one ounce.

                          Hi Harry,
I would have to agree that if the wheels exceeded a certain weight they would have to be rejected or spun.

As the collection turns out the most common weights found are the lower weighted (.5, 1.0, 1.5)
To repeat myself, there are many MICRO highest oz. (one 4.0 oz) weights WITHOUT the winged tip. Would they be acceptable for judging too?

Harry , I believe your are correct with weight amount, pass. car's you generally do like to see more than 2.5 ozs. Also when judging there is no weight on the outside portion of wheel.

With the reproduction tires it takes a lot of time to get the tire in the right spot on the rim, and then they always seem to take more weight than a factory tires.

As I recall there are no ounces specified in the JG's. If I see 4 ounces, I would not take any deductions but I would write a comment that the weight is excessive and the owner should think about fixing the problem.
