Big money, low VIN#, says it has had two NCRS flight judgings and comes with score sheets and original tank sticker, trim tag and VIN tag. Somebody was convinced it was real.Big Tanks In the High Mountains of New Mexico- Top

Re: '67 427 with AO Smith body sells @ BJ
Other people, based on the past advertised history of this VIN# and what is known about A.O. Smith cars, are just as convinced that it is as phony as a three dollar bill. Let's hope the new owner knows something no one else knows. It's a very nice car, for what it is. Unfortunately, that "what it is" seems questionable at best. Personally, I wouldn't have touched it with a ten-foot pole . . . but obviously someone else certainly would.
And did.- Top

I really find it hard to believe anyone would pay that kind of money without a thorough due diligence done by an expert. BJ has had a long association with NCRS experts, you do wonder what the new buyer did along those lines.Big Tanks In the High Mountains of New Mexico- Top

Re: '67 427 with AO Smith body sells @ BJ
Big money for most. Pocket change for some. A few years back I saw a guy at BJ pay $500K + 10% buyers premium for a Boss 429 Mustang. He sold it the next year at BJ for $300K - sellers fees. He basically lost 50% on his "investment" in 1 year, and it was a REAL DEAL car. This 67 has way too many unanswered questions about being real or fake. My bet is it's the latter of the two.- Top

Re: '67 427 with AO Smith body sells @ BJ
For those of us who are small block guys, I am aware that A O Smith had a problem with being able to paint the big block hoods. Please enlighten us on the history and details of the A O Smith big block production.
Thanks Greg- Top

Re: '67 427 with AO Smith body sells @ BJ
This happens all the time with BJ and DM. There are a lot of people that purchase (ice cream cars) and impress their ladies paying big bucks for cars.
Please don't be so surprised as a large number of NCRS members make a large living by trading in this market!
Does the membership think those people should be exposed?

But not only were '67 BBs by AO Smith in dispute and controversial, here is a thread about the SB ones too, near the end of their production:

Re: '67 427 with AO Smith body sells @ BJ
.............. They were on their way out of producing Corvette bodies (for various reasons), and by the end of the '67 MY their contract was terminated by GM and AO Smith began a new life producing the body parts and final assembly for the Shelby Mustangs at Ionia.

He asked that I "keep this info confidential unless a current owner needs it for his car".- Top

Re: '67 427 with AO Smith body sells @ BJ
Just wondering were the flight awards chapter third flight's? Another point/question should not this car have been branded counterfeit without documentation? Surprised Roy has not posted as an representative of BJ and Corvette expert on the scene.- Top

The awards might be 20 years old, long before today's counterfeiting rules were put in place.- Top

Re: '67 427 with AO Smith body sells @ BJ
Any Corvette that has distinguished itself in Flight judging before 2002-2003 should be re-examined, as I suspect that many of these and including more than a few Duntov cars would be labeled "counterfeit" by today's standards. There should be a broadcast recall notice issued for all of these, so as to prevent any further debacles such as this from occurring.
This is the major reason for my disillusionment with the NCRS and why many members should re-examine their "allegiance". The playing field had been dramatically altered in 2002, but no measures were taken retroactively.- Top

Re: '67 427 with AO Smith body sells @ BJ
Since you mentioned my name I am going to respond to you as simply as I can. First and don’t take this as directed at any individual just as a fact, there are numerous internet trolls that love nothing else than to drag you into the mud so they can waller you, I’m not going there and have nothing else to say about this car, its selling price, the buyer or Barrett-Jackson. I believe everything I am about to say can be documented. I was involved with this car before it was accepted for consignment at Barrett-Jackson, I was responsible for its consignment to Barrett-Jackson. In a very small part that is part of my responsibility at Barrett-Jackson to work with sellers and make sure that we tell as correct a story as we can about the vehicle. As the 67 Corvette National Team leader from 1993 through 1996 and the National Judging chairman from 1997 through 2013 I think it would be fair to say I was as skeptical as anybody about this car. I looked at the tank sheet which was represented as being with the car its entire life and my initial reaction was this is not a valid tank sheet for several different reasons. B-J has an agreement with NCRS and we receive confirmation of awards and information out of the shipping data records in our effort to validate vehicles. That information came back and indicated this tank sheet carried legit identifiers, I went back and reevaluated the sheet knowing that. In the process of reevaluation it became apparent that the tank sheet, selling dealer, zone information and production dates contained some really interesting information. I then decided to physically inspect the vehicle and concluded, still believe, it is an A O Smith built body that was assembled on the assembly line in St. Louis as a big block 1967 Corvette. NCRS correctly stated they did not do a document validation on the car, the long lead catalogs and press releases were already done they could not be changed, so I changed the write up in Reno when I arrived.
I Inspected the vehicle at length prior to consignment and concluded and will stand by my conclusion that this car is a A O Smith Big Block Corvette apparently initially scheduled to be built as the 40th car on the line the first day of production, but held in some type of quality production audit and not released until the 365th car, then held again after assembly for a period of time. All of the production hold stuff is assumption backed by documentable date sequences from GM production records. Bottom line the score sheets were old a second flight from 1990 before restoration and a top flight after restoration in 2002 and yes they were both Chapter events but in an area of the country that had a very strong positive judging base. All the paper work was present with the car in Reno in the property room and I know it was inspected by at least two of the three to five bidders. It sold at approximately 1:30 pm west coast time, the various chat boards can talk about alcohol and sky bidders all they want. This was national broadcast live TV with the cameras on the bidders and it sold when the next to last bidder said I’m done.- Top
