Re: can someone decode this tire?

Not sure of the date with the 8 digit code you listed. I think for sure we can say it's 70 or earlier, because starting in 1971 Federal Regs. Required every tire to have an identification number TIN, which allowed the tire to be traced in case of a safety recall. The TIN was an 11 digit alpha-numeric number usually on the inside sidewall. Just like the one pictured above in Ross's initial post. Your code clearly doesn't have any numbers. Sorry, maybe someone else will be able to decode it for you.

        Hi Terry,
This is really interesting to me. Would you mind explaining how you got the 12th week of July from the code above?
        Thank you😊

I have a copy of the Goodyear code chart. I simply looked it up. Easy Peasy

Thanks Terry, to expand on what Jimmy asked, can you please explain how the letters on my tire translate to the 12th week of 1970?
            Thanks, Justin

There is not much to it. One looks it up in the chart. How much can I explain? Any monkey could do it.

Does it take a special monkey to provide a chart or link to the chart?

Yes it does, and that monkey doesn't belong to NCRS.

There is a Wicki on-line about the introduction of the Federally mandated date codes in Spring of 1971. Tire manufacturers had argued for years that their tire codes were trade secrets and they refused to release them to the public. The mandated codes, which still exist today, came about because of the intransigence of the tire manufacturers.

If released, the Goodyear codes would cause us to judge dates on Goodyear tires, but there are no codes for other brands. This would put owners of Goodyear tires at a disadvantage; or put another way it would put the owners of other brands at an advantage. It is best for the good of the order to keep them all secret. That way we are all on an even footing. Remember, we are not supposed to be competing against each other.

This monkey business certainly makes this an interesting read! I'll bet Marilyn Monroe could get the story out of them.
