          Re: Judging Retreat

The Judging Retreat was very well done. The first day was classroom time:

          - Freddie Grim and Joesph Scafidi presented "The Matrix Judging System".

          - Bill Calorico and Shannon Urton presented "Judging Functionality" and also did a great job teaching how to judge condition.

          - Tom Russon and Terry McManmon presented "Judging Etiquette" (title not exact), and covered the human side of the judging process.

Tom Ames and John Ballard presented "Paint & Fiberglass".

Each had lots of examples, photos, and real world stories. Tom and John even gave us a preview of the new paint judging flowchart in effect later this year.

On the second day, we went to the "garage bay" which was a large ballroom downstairs from the classroom. We were paired up and practiced judging on several cars with the guidance of an instructor. Every 20 minutes went to the "bullpen" to discuss what we saw, and how to apply the judging process we learned to assign scores.

There was a mix of bowtie, or near bowtie, condition cars, as well as cars restored to a range of levels. Practice scoring on less than perfect cars was a good learning opportunity for applying our CDCIF and condition judging skills.

They even had folks role-playing the owner to practice communicating results and dealing with feedback.

This was a very well organized and effective event.

                Thank you NCRS!
A special thanks to all who made the 2016 NCRS Judging Retreat a great success! The people, the content and the hands on experiences were all amazing. The instructors were all very informative and did a great job. It was challenging, fun and very Corvette educational. WOW! If you missed it I suggest you catch the next one. It was great meeting enthusiasts from all over the country and sharing their stories about their cars. A common interest with one common goal: To learn and preserve the Chevrolet Corvette. Note: My 66 Trophy Blue Roadster was in the garage.
                All the best!

That's great, the pictures show some nice ones. Was Carlton playing the part of the "difficult" owner again?

                            Michael,

Not identical. While 2013 was excellent, this was even better! All classes were excellent, with new classes in Judging Etiquette and Condition Judging. Classes were recorded so we should be seeing some new Judging DVDs in the future. The new paint judging approach was discussed (what you have already seen at the Regionals) and we will get new cards AFTER the R.I. National. Tom Ames and John "the real deal" Ballard did the painting class. John brought his original paint mid-year and Tom brought his own restored mid-year. Both were great cars. Tom's was very interesting as it clearly demonstrated getting "original" appearance using modern materials.

The second day on the floor was better than last time. Although the C4/C5 backed out there were excellent C1/C2s that we rotated through. Individual cars were assigned letters (A, B, C, ...) and students were also assigned a letter (A, B, C, ...). Student letters determined which car you started with. Students were also assigned partners for the day. There were Team Leaders and Instructors serving both as Owners and Teachers.

First thing in the morning every one worked Fiberglass Fit and Finish using the Standard Deduction Table. Instructors were there to answer questions and assist. After the F&F exercise, each two person team was given Mechanical, Chassis, Exterior, or Interior judging sheets. The objective of these exercises were to practice and improve your skill using Standard Deduction and C.D.C.I.F. Two teams were on the car for 15 minutes, then the other two teams were on the car. When you weren't on the car you were in the "bull pen" discussing with your instructor how you arrived at your scores. After several on/off the car efforts you out-briefed the "owner". The exercises were not intended to have you complete the judging sheets only to improve your skills as a judge. Part of the "owner out-brief" was dealing with "problems" that might occur. Next was a short break and then you rotated on to the next car.

On the next car, you were given a different judging team assignment e.g. if you were Exterior on the first car, then you assigned Mechanical on the second car, etc. Team Leaders and Instructors did an excellent job.

This training approach was fast paced and the day went by quickly. Hats off to the Instructors and Owners that provided their cars.

Thanks David, it does sound better, all those are improvements over last time. I really enjoyed the role playing 400 pt.+judges and team leads last time, Carlton was great, hope they continued that tradition.
