    Bill....

Thanks... I think that is the key item.... it would seem that the catalog photos would verify the raised areas.... I have done a few searches but have not been able to find anything....

    Thanks!!!

1966 Chassis service manual Section 6Y shows a good picture of the battery configuration being discussed here....

[QUOTE=Gary Jaynes (3503);778110]Maybe someone has a picture of a Real Tar Top they would like to share. Aren't there some raised pads running horizontal between the positive and negative post?
So if the $300.00 plus Restoration Battery is getting a 7 point deduct, would you not be better off putting in a Delco Service Replacement Battery and taking the 12 point deduct? At least you would have money in your pocket.
You would think that if Restoration Battery would fix the problem, but that is like everything else. Why not make it correct the first time![/QUOT

Here is a picture of the raised pads you speak of . I however have no idea if they are appropriate at all , or appropriate for only certain years.

Could this be the raised areas the judges were speaking of ??

Reading this thread closely as I am just about ready to purchase a battery myself.

            HI:

This seems to be a bit clearer now.... the battery that Bill C. referenced in the '66 service manual is here:

....and of course the photo Jim S. provided has the raised areas ---- labeled "Protected Cell Connector" in the photo above ......

I am making the assumption now that those raised areas (or lack of them) on some batteries were getting a deduction for configuration ---

Thanks to everyone who chipped in on this!!!

              Bill ,

I offered up that picture as a possible explanation . I was hoping that someone who knows for sure would have replied so you and I wouldn't have to make that assumption !

For one thing , even if that is the raised areas the judges spoke of , are they correct for a 66 battery ? If you look closely at my picture ,that particular battery is not correct for a 66 Corvette, it's just the only picture I could find with the raised areas on top . Secondly , even though it somewhat matches the picture in the Service Manual, the Manual was printed in 65 and I suspect that picture was right out of the 63 SM, if not even earlier .

In short , it looks like the Delco DC 12 battery was used from 61 through 66. Were the raised areas there for the entire run ? It appears Restoration Battery doesn't think so . Inquiring Minds , as well as someone who is about to order one , Want To Know !

              Jim

Re: C2 Tar Top Battery Configuration Issue

Curious that no one ever answered if these raised pads are correct for a 66?

Or ANY DC-12 for that matter. IMHO Those raised pads were a 50's thing. I have no less that 4 vintage batteries, DC-12 with Delco dates and I fail to see those pads, but I have seen them on 40's era 6 volt Ford cells.

Re: C2 Tar Top Battery Configuration Issue

This is a real Tar Top Delco batttery . I have just posted so every battery expert can see what the top of a Delco Tar Top really looks like.

Looks like the reproduction battery really is a great copy of what Delco originally made.

If there is such a problem with reproduction batteries why aren't the radiators, hoses, belts, seat covers, carpets, door panels, emblems etc. etc. discriminated against like the batteries.

Nearly every Corvette shown at NCRS events should be called repo-mobiles anyway!

I totally agree Joe, well said. It is the biggest frustration on judging I have encountered, where dead nuts on reproductions get a big deduction just because they are not originals. So many other reproductions get by fine, makes no sense.

                      Question on the battery

                      What year? 65?

                      F5N date code translates to?
                      June 65. N plant?

                      Has a 66 notch?

                        Ron,

That's a 959 Delco batttery which was used in a truck. Just showing it to display what the top of a real tar top battery looks like from the 60's! The 959 Delco Battery is about 1/2" taller and is designated a Heavy Duty Battery by Delco. Don't know the date codes. Used that battery in a 63 I campaigned back in 1993.

As I replied to the other thread, I have one identical to your 250 with the LIC date code. Neither date code fit the model that Restoration Battery had published.
Nor does it account for post dating. Was date stamped NEG post a service only operation?

Other than size, there is one obvious difference to a real DC12 - on the top, what is it?

I can see why you guys are struggling with AAB, the answers you get. I asked about the F5N date code and they said it wasn't real, then the L1C and she told me it was March build date fo the car, OMG, we have good factual data sources here. Never got an answer if the 63-65 configuration had a flange notch yes or no...
