Re: No love for the 68?

I like the 1968's and hope the turnout is good at events for the 50th anniversary. I was only 12 when they were released, but I do remember the awe they caused. My brother and I were trying to get my mom to buy a '68 Pontiac LeMans, so that was really on our radar. The '68 Corvette was amazing at the time.

Re: No love for the 68?

A year or two ago at the Frisco Regional, there was a '68 with an interior that stopped me in my tracks. It looked like a rich tobacco or dark saddle. I guessed it was the Tobacco trim offered that year, but the owner informed me it was the rare Dark Orange.

Perhaps one reason it's rare is because of its name? My guess is if more original '68 shoppers saw that trim in person, more would have ordered it. Thinking back, this may be my favorite Corvette interior color, ever.

        I've been a '68 fan since.

FWIW> I can say the same thing for Camaro's. The 68 is the least popular being sandwiched between the
1st one(67) in Gen1 and the most popular last one(69). Larry

Re: No love for the 68?

Used to work with (or around) a gal in the Methodist pharmacy! She bought a new 68 convertible. After she spent days in the dealership trying to get things worked out they bought the 68 back just to get rid of her!
She got really PO when she opened the door to get out and it dropped down about 6 inches. Guess the old boys in St. Louie didn't tighten the hinge screws enough!
With all the different hardware that changed in 1969 it is not economical to reproduce the one off parts. That makes the parts available very hard to find and very expensive.
Restorers want a return on their money and it's more expensive to restore a 1968 and less return when they are sold.
Unless you have a repo 1968 L-88 you'll go in the hole! And yes the intake on a real 1968 L-88 is different! ???????

Regarding the mirror position. It seems the designer wanted the mirror forward to blend in with the pillar. Later, when they put a mirror on the right, the pillar blocked half the mirror from the driver's position. So they moved it back a bit. And the driver side had to follow. Live and learn.

One of the things I like is the blacked out areas beneath the doors (rocker panels?). It makes that part of the car 'disappear', adding to its vertical thinness.

Please tell us about the right hand mirrors on 1968s. Who is "they," and when did 1968s get the right hand mirror?

I'm sorry, I was generalizing regarding mirrors on a C-3. I'm not aware of 1968 vehicles having passenger side mirrors installed during regular production. But now that you say that, the cars with a driver-only mirror had the mirror pulled back before the right side mirror was introduced. Maybe GM engineers were planning for '69. Perhaps they found where the mirror needed to be located on the passenger side, and implemented the shift on the driver side in '68 in anticipation of this change. 'They' is GM in my post. My VIN is 406922; the car is largely original, one exception being the addition of a passenger mirror.

The right-hand factory mirror did not occur until 1973.

I always loved 68 s and looked for years for a decent BB convertible in Bronze with the Tobacco interior. I gave up looking 2 or 3 years ago and last fall came across what I think is a very original and pretty nice car. Only 37,000 original miles , all original L 36 drive train, original top and interior and what looks to be one repaint from the early eighties . Tank sticker, protecto Plate , all interior hang tags. The car sat a long time and I've spent the last year making it a road worthy driver, fluids, tires, exhaust etc. Not sure what I'll do with it but it's a great driver.
