Real simple guys, rest o mods are the hot rods, street rods of yester-year. They are worth the most they will ever be worth .01 second before the last check is written and they are obsolete when the next car is started. Don't get me wrong I love them, have owned several and would own another. But there are none of them in my collection as favorites, I will keep forever, those are all original or restored original cars. Except for my Blown ford 8BA Ardun 32 Vicky.

But then you grow up get some experience with other things, make your choices about what spins your wheels, and go that direction. The fact others take a different direction means nothing to you, or shouldn't.
Last year I saw a mid-year that had a C4 "restomod" job that was done in the early 90s. Looked stock, but had an L98 engine, 700R transmission, and C4 cuisinart wheels. Probably looked cool back then; looks dated now. Would that car be more desirable now if it was just left alone in a barn?

It's the same story with pre-war V8 Fords and tri-five Chevys.

The good news is there are plenty of Corvettes around for all of us.

        I spent a year looking for a nice C4 based C1 or C2 resto-mod for sale. Nothing.

I called three different big name dealers, they all told me they wished they had a dozen to sell.

The one dealer that had just sold a 1957 C4 based high end restomod (Art Morrison chassis, LT4, 6 speed) on consignment told me it sold the day it arrived in the shop. He would not disclose the price, but said it sold for 6 figures. It was about 10 years old and had 5K miles on it.

I agree, they are worth the most as soon as they are done, but they do seem to hold their value well.

One guy I spoke to at the B-J Scottsdale Auction builds one C1 or 2 resto a year and claims he makes money at it (maybe a $1 on hour???). He does all is own work and they sell for $150-175ish.

Re: Vehicle demographics in 2018 and beyond

I read this thread with great interest, and will share my thoughts from the perspective of a younger NCRS member. I'm 40 yrs old and own a '60 that my dad used to own. He lost interest in it back in 2003 and I've had it ever since. Now I have a young family and I find myself driving it less and less each year. I haven't been to an NCRS event since about 2009. So one question I have asked myself and a co-worker that also owns a C1 is when do these old cars become undrivable and/or unsafe in their stock configuration? Maybe the restomod fad is a manifestation of just how old and technologically antiquated the C1s have become. Nobody sees a stock Model T driving around anymore. I predict the same fate for the original C1s, especially when the Baby Boomer generation decides to get out of the hobby. This is probably happening already if as was posted earlier is true that fewer cars are being offered for Flight judging.
