I would leave as much as possible, original undercoating examples are hard to find. So you have an example of the real deal which may help other members out. Might try some mild cleaners to get black color back.

Gary,
For an original or restored car, Alan's advice is correct. But even when I restored my car, I left the undercoating on and sprayed over it with black to make it look new again. The texture of what the factory put on is something that can't be duplicated out of a can.

Re: Undercoating strip it or leave it ,64
Bob, I agree with the exception of one situation. My recently acquired two prior owner car '64 received the "dealer option" of undercoating and from the volume of undercoating on this car they must have had a sale on the stuff back in '64. I left a lot of it in the wheel wells and painted it black because it was essentially an ugly gray color. The underside, frame, suspension were massively covered and I decided to take it all off over several months. It certainly did it's job because the frame and all are pristine now with much of the original frame paint, stencil, pull date stencil, shim markings, inspection marks on the differential, etc. are all still there. Even though it is a very original car.....the color was changed back in 1976 from it's original Silver blue to Satin silver, so it won't be judged as a survivor. Because of this I am sure the next owner will appreciate the countless hours I spent carefully scraping this stuff off.Garry Barnes #18531

Re: Undercoating strip it or leave it ,64
Garry,
I definitely agree with you! I was speaking of the factory undercoating on the rear of the wheel wells. The dealer undercoating to make a few extra bucks and ruin the car for future generations of restorers is something that must be removed. From what I understand, dealer undercoating of the car provided a seal for water that otherwise would have been able to drain out and actually caused more rust than without it!

Gary, is the undercoating on the battery cover more than, less than or equal to the undercoating on the rest of the inner fender. If there is a difference than the battery cover has been changed. Just try to have the appearance of the battery cover look like the rest of the inner fender. Sounds like a nice car you have, 64 A/C coupe.

Re: Undercoating strip it or leave it ,64
If the undercoat is original it may have traces of the original primer, paint, black out on it as they went on in this order over the undercoat. It looks like the heavy original type used. As Bob said black out over it and it looks as good as new.- Top

Gary,
The master cylinder appears to be a 63 unit, check.
The engine compartment was not undercoated, only black-out. (may have mis-read your post, sorry) however it looks
like only black-out.- Top
