Re: Question for NY guys re: surrender plates

if you have old plates in new york, you have to take a pic of them and send the pic to dmv. they will allow you to put the old plates on your car. i found a new york worlds fair 1964 plate to go on my 64 coupe. now in 64 dmv only issued one plate for the rear. so i found a guy to make me a custom plate for the front.

Simple solution. Let your registration run out and then cancel the insurance. I would no way give this God for shaken state my vintage plates that I own.

Wow must be very little crime in NY if police have nothing better to do than chasing people around looking for plates. In most states a certificate of insurance is sent to the state & police have that info when calling in a plate #.

We sympathize with you classic car people in New York.

Maybe that is why many Arizonans are FROM New York.

Okay, I don't mean to sound dumb, but what are vanity plates?

Whether or not the reg is expired the insurance can’t be dropped without the receipt for surrender. If you claim they were stole, you need a police report I think it might be a crime to file a false police report. Even though George Costanza from Seinfeld said: “It’s not a lie if you believe it” 

But, I had this idea. We can get vanity plates in NY. They come in the mail with a new window sticker. I did this for both my wife’s car and my DD. When they come you take the old plates off and put them on the shelf. Put the new plates on. Done. So if I ask for and pay for vanity plates I will probably be able to keep the vintage ones. Great state NY. With enough money you can do anything. 

It does work I’ve done it. In fact they are all hanging on the garage wall. Nothing great about nys government, get real.

I could tell you a long sad story about the Florida police NOT chasing people down that run illegal uninsured plates on the state's two year registration cycle.

They get insurance for a couple of months, register the car for 24 months, then cancel the insurance after a few premium payments, then run on the illegal tags but with proper stickers until they crash into you and then you're screwed... A popular scheme with illegal immigrants that know the cops don't follow up...

VANITY PLATES: License plates that are special ordered with a custom number/letter sequence; the car owner pays a premium to get them.

Whatever you NYer's do, do NOT violate your quarantine by looking up your legislators names and addresses and writing he/she to ask why this stupid law exists, including the provision against restoring old plates, even though it's apparently legal to use them if you can get the monkey to jump through enough hoops and hold onto its tail for a prescribed amount of time. Or is it mandatory to execute constituents who bother elected representatives? That would explain a lot ........

I just moved from NC to SC not long ago and found out that SC demands you turn in a plate on a sold car. If not the SCHP will come and visit you (so I have been told by a local restoration shop). Different states - Different rules.
