The great state remark was sarcasm. I’ve lived here long enough so all I can do is say it only hurts when I laugh. So, you’re saying what you did was in NY? If that’s the case it makes life easier
Edit edit. I see you’re in NY from your profile. Thanks for the info.

Maryland is the same, they came after me 13 YEARS after I had moved to Florida with a bill for over $4,000 in fines and penalties because they claimed I didn't turn in my plates before moving to Florida (which I did).

No notice or anything in the intervening years....turns out a financial audit found out their computer systems were hosed and they were trying to CYA for all the database screw-ups by shooting out nastygrams willy-nilly. A 3 year fight to get them off my back.

Don't screw around on this, obey the letter of the law precisely...

How can you turn in plates before moving; wouldn't you then be driving to a new destination without plates?

owen, after you move, you re-register the car in that state, then mail the old plates to your old dmv. get a return receipt on the plates from the post office.

My wife moved before I did and established residency in Florida (and registered her cars there), so there was a "twist" to the story but the results are the same...

Thanks Michael, When I moved to Oregon from Arizona 25+ years ago, as I recall, I gave OrDMV my AZ plates. Have no clue what they did after that. I suppose things could have changed in a quarter-century!
