After posting this I noticed the answer was in a recent reply to another post - so I am all set, no need to reply to this post

Uppers bushings are painted black along with the washer, cross shaft, and bolt. Lowers are all natural except the bolt and lock washer are plated black oxide.

        - if the unit has been painted as a whole.

If the unit was painted as separate parts, with a natural cross shaft, then the washers and bolt are not painted either.
You can find them originally either way.

Yes, my original 1969 a-arms, upper and lower, had unpainted shafts, unpainted retainers (convex washers), and unpainted nuts and lockwashers.

Although I mentioned in a prior thread that uppers are usually black and lowers or natural, I have seen a couple of cars were they were natural up and down and in one particular scenario one original type Corvette had one upper shaft painted black and the other natural. Like my colleagues on this discussion mentioned, if the shaft is black and so are the bushings etc. and if natural everything is natural.
