Re: Coil spring tape/tag location
No guess work or opinion here.
GM Engineering print, #3851100 Spring - front states: "All coil springs except service must be individually identified by part number (1/4" High) & assembly plant code (1/2" High) printed tape applied on any one of the three (3) center coils of the spring. All service coil springs must be individually identified by part number with printed tape applied on the center coil of the spring"
Tape specification and description:
Material: Behr Manning #197 or equivalent
Width: 1.00 inch
Length: Sufficient to wrap completely around spring bar stock with 1.25 min. overlapped ends. Adhesive sides together toward ID of coil spring.
Color: Behr Manning #197 Green with Black printed part number & assembly plant code. Like number & letters to be repeated approx. every inch. Color must match samples retained by Engineering Dept.- Top

Re: Coil spring tape/tag location
Just adding a few different 1966 assembly line images (plus zoomed-in)... draw your own conclusions.
Engine install... no observable shock tag, from this vantage point:

1966-L79-Factory-Assembly-Line-02.jpg
Body drop... there seems to be a visible shock tag, from this direction:

As usual, your mileage may vary.- Top

Re: Coil spring tape/tag location
Gary,
Like I replied earlier, there was no designated position as to where the tag was placed. It was for internal use only. What was paramount is that the tail of the tag faced inward toward the shocks which I believe was so the label would not get damaged during shipping.

Hummm... could that be a tag hanging inside:

Re: Coil spring tape/tag location
EA -- 63-66 Corv. w/sp. per susp. HD Part #3832518
EB -- 63-64 Corv. 1st design (exc. Sp. Per) Part #3832684
EC -- 63-64 Corv. w/C.A.C. (1st design) Part #3833319
ED -- 64-66 Corv. (2nd design) (exc. HD Sp. Per. Susp.) Part #3851100
EF -- Need a little more time to dig that one up. Could be: 66 Corv. w/C.A.C. (427) (exc. Sp. H/Per) Part #3880400
Obviously Manufactures Assembly codes ID use of coil spring.- Top

Re: Coil spring tape/tag location
David, Im a bit confused on the codes. What do you have for the #3888250 (standard BB spring 66-67)? and the #3888251 (66-67 w/spring for C.A.C 427)?
As a matter of note the 65 JM currently states EB for the 250 but above noticed you have it for the 684. To your knowledge is the JM incorrect?
Thanks.- Top

Re: Coil spring tape/tag location
Gary, yes on the 66jm, I'm with you. My understanding there were no spring codes for the 684 in 63, And to be sure we aren't confusing the text string here I think your 252 is a typo. Did you mean 251?
And Gary, One more thing, my bowtie/survivors; the tag is forward at 3/4:00 basically pointing to the front parking lights of the cars if that helps. Just a focus group of one.- Top

Re: Coil spring tape/tag location
Gary I should of been more clear. I was looking just at the driver side when I stated in the above post. So after looking at all cars and both sides and various pics of two other 65 one owner survivors I have in my library interestingly enough; driver sides = forward at 3:00/4 and passenger sides rear at 9:00/10. Again just a focus group of one
but you are on to something.
