Re: C-2 Differential Drain Plug
A pipe tap and a replacement plug should do it.
grease the tap so you can get most the filings out with it.
The sign of a professional? They know when to stop before the Screw it up.

Thats a shame the correct shouldered plugs are pretty expensive. Around $40 they are course thread so it should have been pretty hard to cross thread. I doubt much metal will dump into the oil but it would be quiet a job to clean it out if you have to. is it a posi rear? is the tag still there?- Top

Why on God's green earth would someone take their classic car to Jiffy Lube ?

Re: C-2 Differential Drain Plug
The only plug on a stock 63-79 vette diff is the "fill" plug and 66 would have a 3/4 npt plug. I do tap real drain plugs on non NCRS type vette rebuilds and makes oil changing a simple matter.
Every rear cover I install, new or original, I have to chase the plug holes a little. As mentioned the tapered plug should tighten well before the plug bottoms in the hole. I would remove the plug, wire brush the threads clean and see how is screws in. If you want you can use some Permatex #2 on the threads to seal it better, do not use Permatex high temp white thread sealant. It works great and I use it on other plugs I want to seal but it locks the threads like a Loctite product.
You would expect anyone beyond 12 years old can screw in a pipe plug and snug it up without damage but that is not the case with some professional oil changers. Having a high turn over rate, low pay and most likely no benefits leaves a questionable service staff at some of those chain stores. I have seen some of the damage that some of caused, such as stripped plugs, pans, and even forgetting to add oil back in the engine.- Top

Re: C-2 Differential Drain Plug
The techs at Jiffy Lube just want if fast. If they can use power tools they do. Even if it's against policy.
And yes I bring my Truck there. Two years ago they showed me my dirty cabin air filter. I chose to have it replaced and then they found they were out of stock. So I drove to the nearest auto part place after I left Jiffy. Purchased new filters and went to put them in and they were nothing like the one they has showed me 20 min earlier.
Dave. I am glad you got a plan for the repair.
Can anyone identify this plug?
