A current thread regarding earlier washer bags got my curiosity going. I have what I believe to be my original '67 washer bag. Two quotes from the 7th edition of the '67 TIM&JG have me confused. My bag measures approximately 6 1/2" x 13 1/2". The TIM&JG states it should be 6 1/2" x 11". Secondly, the TIM&JG states that the back of the bag "is a charcoal-colored dark gray cloth". Mine appears to be a tan shade of cloth with some splotches of gray. I spoke with Peter Lindahl at the Lone Star Regional a few years back, as he had a '67 bag for sale that looked exactly like mine. I questioned him about the backside and he said the tan was absolutely factory correct. The bracket holes are brass colored magnetic steel. Those in the know, please take a look at the attached pictures and give me your educated opinions. Thanks in advance.

Re: '67 Windshield Washer Bag with A/C
Leif,
I hope this doesn’t muddy the waters, but there is a listing on eBay right now of what is claimed to be a ‘67 NOS (service replacement) washer bag. That listing includes this photo of the back side:
338F3A93-85A0-4E34-A4DB-DFC70F1E0302.jpg
That looks off-white or light tan, and smoother, more plastic-like to me. Not a coarsely, textured cloth. The concern with an NOS bag is that it’s a service replacement part and may not be identical to the part used on the production line. (As an aside, the description in the ‘66 JG also says the back is “charcoal-colored dark gray cloth”, which sounds nothing like what is shown in the eBay auction. But that could be another key difference between the 63-66 bag and the ‘67-style service replacement part.)
Regarding the 11” width given in the ‘67 JG, I have to think it’s not correct. The ‘67-style bag served as the service replacement for 63-66 bags and the distance between grommets centers must be the same in order for the bag to hang from the same bracket on 63-66 cars as on ‘67 cars. But people seem to agree that the ‘67 bag has the grommets 1.25” inward from the corners, so the ‘67 bag must be wider overall, and all indications are that the ‘67 bag is 13.5” wide. Compared to 11” wide for the 63-66 bag.
Leif, regarding your statement: “The bracket holes are brass colored magnetic steel”, could the color be a surface blush of rust? Unless I’m convinced otherwise, my belief is the grommets are either non-magnet brass (63-66), or magnet steel (67). Both materials will oxidize and change color over 54+ years.

Leif, regarding your statement: “The bracket holes are brass colored magnetic steel”
Gary,
I will let the picture I posted speak for itself. There does appear to be slight surface rust on the bracket holes, they are magnetic and they are brass colored magnetic steel.
Thanks for your input.Leif

Larry, the bag in my 67, believe its a June car, has the black/dark grey back. I can post a photo once I get to the car. I do not know if it is a original production line bag since I am not the original owner.- Top

Re: '67 Windshield Washer Bag with A/C
Leif,
A friend used force and threats to talk me out of my only NOS AC bag. However, it was exactly like the one you have pictured here, grommets, color of backing and all. Also it was 13.5 inches. I know for a fact....Be well my friend...>ARA- Top

OK, now that ARA has weighed in on this, I feel safe to comment. My '67's washer bag, alleged to be original (but I cannot swear to that as I am not the first owner), is identical to yours in all ways, including the size, the "D" on it and position, the backside color and texture, and the steel grommets on it. It was judged at the Scottsdale Regional in May, no deductions. Also, I was on the '67 team judging cars in Cedar Rapids, 1 had an alleged original bag that is identical to ours. Re: '67 Windshield Washer Bag with A/C
Since you mentioned you have an NOS bag, what do you make of this ‘67 bag on eBay that claims to be NOS?
It was pointed out to me you can just make out the D on the front side of the eBay bag, but the back is light-colored, plastic looking, not dark, cloth textured. Do people think that GM changed the makeup of the service replacement bag over time?
