Re: Need Advice On Trailer Tire Air Pressure Recommendations For Corvette Hauling

Dave: Thank you very much for your insight. Your comments indicate to me your very knowledgeable about
trailering. I will take your advice and start with a 55-60 psi cold air pressure in 65 psi rated tires. Thanks Again>
Larry P.S. Why I added slightly to your figure of 55 psi is because I'm probably a "hair" over 7000# with the "other"
things in the trailer besides the C2.

Maximum tire prsssure placarded on the sidewall are always COLD. Even if you are not carrying maximum load running pressure at the placarded cold maximum does no harm.

Never bleed air out of a hot tire. Pressure increases from running at speed especially in hot weather can increase by up to 10 psi.

Chris>Very nice idea;may buy one. Just curious where do you keep your trailer spare at on a trip? My trailer has a
"Under frame Box" in the middle of the trailer towards the front. So to get to it I would have to back the car out
of the trailer which could be a headache if the weather is bad. Do most people put the spare in their pickup bed just
            for the trip?? Thanks>Larry

Having the Tire Ramp Chris mentions above, or a lightweight hydraulic jack, along with your tools, a properly inflated spare tire in good condition, and handy is the best way to travel when towing a loaded trailer. If your tow vehicle affords you the room it will be the best place. I always put these things at the back of my truck bed. If you can avoid unloading the trailer, it saves you from all the work you did to pack it up for the trip. My goal is to only open the trailer to check the tie-down straps, and be sure the car is safe once loaded. Fortunately, I have only had one trailer tire go down, and it was on the left side. Changing it on the side of the road will likely be the worst part of your trip! So plan for it and make it easy on yourself. I hope I (and all of you guys) never have to do it again!

Thanks for starting this thread, and to all who offered offered some great tips and information on this topic.

I have 2 spares - both are up front - one on either side after the cabinets - easy access and easy to get to
                Trailer is a 24 ft
Cabinets are up front with a hidden winch
In my cabinets are tools that dont leave the trailer
2 bottle jacks, battery charger, battery cables, 4x4 wood and misc wood, tie downs, axle straps, blankets, towels, gloves, I tried to be prepared for any out of town emergency or road side
I also carry an additional fire ext right inside the road door and flares and 2 large orange cones.....

My Haulmark Custom made vendor trailer has a new set of Goodyear 205-75R 15 trailer tires. Specs on tire 65 PSI. I use 58 Cold.
I had the trailer inspected (required in PA) and all four wheels removed and had the wheel bearings packed the old fashion way. So many trailer accidents because of wheel bearing failure and low tire pressure.
Make sure your breakaway switch is working.
I always wonder why after a show I see guys pulling a trailer passing everyone up.??.
I tow at 60-65 period. John

Ha! I always use my 700 HP supercharged Ford Raptor, and now a Shelby F-150 to tow my Corvettes, I usually tow at 75-90 mph, depending on the police surveillance situation on the Interstates......RaptorTrailex.jpgSheldon.jpg

I've been towing an enclosed car hauler for 35 years. Buy the highest load rated tires you can find in the size you have.....and DO NOT
use Goodyear trailer tires. I used to have horrible blowouts on my trailer on long hauls, each of which did a lot of damage to my trailer
that I had to repair........All that stopped when i quit putting Goodyear tires on the trailer. I've run Maxxis tires on it for twenty years with
no blowouts and no flats......Ditch the Goodyear tires. Also, I recommend replacing your trailer tires every 4 years. The Badyears always
fail on the rear tires of a tandem axle car hauler because when you steer sharply into filling station driveways or restaurants and the tires are real hot, the rear tires are literally dragged sideways when you steer sharply and the Goodyear tires can't take this and the tires tear apart inside.
I always had the blowouts immediately after stopping for gas and maneuvering sharply in gas station parking lots after long periods of driving
in the summer time with temps in the 90's or above. Badyear....er Goodyear trailer tires cannot take this kind of use.

My '20 GMC Sierra came with the Trailer Tire Pressure Monitor System(TTPMS). The option included 4 TPMS modules which I had installed inside my new 4 camper trailer tires. It monitors pressure and temperature and is programmable. The system can handle up to 6 trailers iirc. Here's a sample of the infotainment display...
                          Camper_195.jpg

I have 2 car trailers also, a Continental steel frame enclosed and a Triple Crown steel frame open. I was about to purchase 8 more compatible TPMS modules for both trailers, and while investigating TPMS systems for my neighbors' Class C 34' Motorhome(6 wheel) and their aluminum car hauler(4 wheel), I found a new technology.

It is a Bluetooth system which uses small modules which replace the tire stem cap on each wheel. We got that system installed for all 10 tires and it works perfectly. It is also programmable and easy to use. They used it on a cross country trip to Arizona a few months ago and it performed very well for them. It also comes with a signal extender which I mounted in their rear bath upper wall corner and ran it's 12v power to the 12v ceiling fan source.
                          This One.
                          71Ri0nHXtyL._SL1500_.jpg

The 2020 E450 Chassis Cab under their Coachmen camper body did not come with a TPMS for its 6 tires. I was surprised at this. Come to find out it's not a Federal requirement for vehicles over a certain GVW I was told.

So I decided on this technology for myself so I can swap it between the 2 car haulers. This One. It's s a 6 tire system so I'll have 2 spare modules or if I get a single axle trailer I can use them on that with a reprogram.
                          716cdrZjQdL._AC_SL1200_.jpg

I haven't used it on my car trailers yet but did some testing on the bench and it appears to work well.

Yes, My Brother in law and I were hauling a empty trailer from central NH to southeast CT a few years ago to pick up his sons Honda wagon that was in a accident on I84 near Waterbury. His son was ok thankfully but the car was totalled.

We were about 2 miles from the exit ramp and the right rear trailer tire blew apart. However come to find out it was the oldest tire of the 4 and looking closely it was about 15 years old. We got a new one at a local shop, loaded the car up and back to NH without trouble.
