Engine is a numbers matching 327/350 hp. Factory A/C convertible. The carb that came on the car is a service replacement Holley list 2818-1 . For some time now it has run well, in general, on a modern Holley 600cfm. But ideally an appropriately dated carb would be of interest.

Best I can tell, the car was built between March 1-April 1 1965, though i will recheck that.

      So is there a consensus?

Agree! The one bad experience noted in the link was from something that happened 25 years ago and was about a carb not a starter. 99.1% on 44,000 sales is phenomenal.

          Thomas,

Speaking from my own perspective, if my eBay seller rating was 99.1%, I would be truly disappointed in myself. In the case of the seller in question, with 44,000 sales, a 99.1 rating means 396 people were not satisfied. Not trivial a number in my opinion.

Give David Sokolowski in California a call...it's possible he'll have a rebuildable, dated carb for you. 310-329-5334

Carbs are a whole other level as far as rebuilds go. I got a rebuilt Carter from Paragon and to be kind, was not usable. They wanted to send me the parts to make things right but I opted for a full return. To their credit, there was hassle for the return. Had that been on ebay I still would have given them a positive review because they didn't jerk me around. I wouldn't buy another carb from however.

I bought a used original for my car, and sent it to another rebuilder mentioned in this thread. I got it back and then sent him my original off the car. when I hooked up the 1st rebuild, the car started and stalled almost immediately. Lots of gas smell. Figured it flooded. Turned out that the pin holding the needle valve had dislodged which is a probably never happened before deal. Everything was made right. That's a positive.

Then there was the guy that bought a wonderbar radio is was selling and the add specifically said non-functioning / parts only. He bought the radio. Brought it to a supposedly well know restorer who told him that it would cost a large sum of money to make it functional. Really no kidding? The guy was a real A-hole and ended up taking it back.

                  Re: Source for original carb

Here's the way it is: a rebuilt carburetor can be no better than the core it was rebuilt from. Many cores have been damaged in unseen ways. Previous inept rebuilders and mechanics and corrosion due to long term use of leaded gas are among the reasons that cores are damaged. Once damaged, the core will never be the basis for a proper running carburetor. A core can look just fine or can clean-up and appear just like a brand new carburetor but if it's been internally damaged, it's just scrap metal as far as I'm concerned. Of course, when original, rare carburetors are found with "the perfect date for a particular car", all caution often goes to the wind and folks pay BIG $$$$ and figure with a quality rebuild all will be well. Not necessarily, though.

In the past, I've purchased rebuilt carburetors for several different cars. I've NEVER had a rebuilt carburetor that ran properly. On the other hand, I've rebuilt my own carbs from carburetor cores I've owned since they were new carburetors and which I knew to be in good, undamaged condition and every one ran perfectly.

However, I'll state something I've said many times before: NOTHING makes a car run like a NEW carburetor. NOTHING. PERIOD. If what's important to you are numbers and dates, then by all means get that core and hope for the best. If what one wants is a good running engine, find a NEW carburetor (if you can). I've got mine.

                    Re: Source for original carb

I had sent the original tired carburetor off my 67 L79 to Holley for restoration. Got it back last week. Installed it today and it functioned perfectly. The Holley Custom Shop offers different levels of service from rebuilding to total restoration which includes replacing worn parts and replatting others.
If you buy a used core it might be another option to send it off to Holley for restoration.
