Keith for grease I just used my old tub of Kendall blue bearing grease, just enough to lubricate the friction surfaces. Too much grease just attracts dirt.

New Auto Gear side cover, beefier than original Muncie, with new shaft seals and springs, cams. Easy swap while shifter is out.

Hey thanks...as if I wasn't hemorrhaging money already with this restore! ;-) So where does one obtain said side cover. Google ain't coming up with much. Did find Autogear website but it is very clunky. I am getting deeper into area of a car than I ever have so some new territory for me.

Forgot to mention that the new Auto Gear shifter forks are billet with a modified design where the shifter arms are clamped to the forks with 2 inch threaded bolts making for a much stronger connection.

Question for the Muncie experts. Whilst my shifter is disassembled and relaxing at Camp Evaporust I figured I would pull the driveshaft on my way to the differential next. Went to rotate the shaft to get the U-bolt nuts on the other side and....oh crap....I put it in gear while taking the shifter and linkages out. I was able to get the shaft out...but got to wondering...how do put the tranny in neutral without linkages??/?

Take a small wrench or small adjustable wrench and close it down on the tangs on the shifter forks. These are the rectangular parts that stick out that your linkage locates onto. Turn them so they face vertical (at least for the 1-2 and 3-4 arms). This puts the arms into neutral.

Thank you Thomas. I figured it was possible...and something along those lines....but thought it best not to just experiment my way to solution!!
