    Dwell meter/Tachometer recommendation

    Hello All,
Can anyone give me a recommendation for a decent digital dwell meter/tachometer? I am asking for a fellow NCRS member who has tried a couple from the local auto parts store and they were junk. The tach read 1400 rpm at idle and and didn't decrease when idle speed was lowered to near stalling. Thanks for the input.

Been using an Innova 5568a for years. It a tach, dwell, and dial back timing light all in one. Very convenient to have all in one unit.

After my Sears (remember them?) tach/dwell from 1972 recently crapped out, I also got an Innova (don't recall the model). In addition to what Ed stated, it's also a volt meter. Nice piece

Thanks to all for your input. If it was me I would buy the Innova unit. I will pass this along.

Thank you all for your help. Ironically, I went to use my old Craftsman Penske engine analyser today and it seems to have timed itself out so I also need one. I just ordered the Innova unit. I'll have it tomorrow.

Follow up: On Saturday I ordered an Innova on Amazon and it arrived on Sunday. We tried it out yesterday and I think it may be the best tool I have ever purchased! Aside from the fact that the owners manual explained NOTHING, once we figured out how to use it, it worked flawlessly. Thanks again for all your input.

Make sure you keep the magnetic pick-up from contacting the exhaust manifold... though a replacement pick-up is readily available. BTDT

And, the best way to do this is to mount the pickup at the distributor cap end of the #1 wire vs down by the spark plug.

                      Owen & Leif,
Thanks for your advise. I have always attached the pickup next to the distributor cap (with all the ignition shielding on the '69 it's the only place to easily attach it). It is a pleasure to switch from the cabinet size engine analyser to a hand held unit that's far easier to read.

                        Jeff,

Did you buy the Innova 5568 as listed on Amazon? I can't find ant with the "a" at the end.

I did buy it on Amazon and searched using just the 5568. It was priced at $124. I also found it cheaper on some other sites including one for $68 but I don't trust them. With Amazon I really feel safe so I felt better paying more.

Good practice Jeff. One more thing, there is an arrow embossed on the pickup showing which way to attach the pickup...facing toward the spark plug. I've not attached the other way to see what the difference would be but...FYI
