Update#1: Radiator drained, heater hoses disconnected, glove box out, trim panels on sides of radio center column removed. Radio extracted (glad somebody provided a diagram showing the heat distributor duct; this was challenging. Is there a trick to pulling out the shift console collar without scratching the center upright padding? I gave up and just pulled the driver side down to let the radio clear.). Wedding today. Going to start the heater duct assembly on Monday. Maybe, while all this is out, I can start to figure out why the wipers have recently developed a mind of their own? Stay tuned. And, thanks again for all the help. Thanks to you folks, so far this is a lot easier than I expected. Well, maybe except for the radio. That was a Harry Houdini maneuver.

Update: OK,…firewall heater core cover removed, inside ductwork removed, replacement parts ordered. The only hiccup was the last speed nut behind the radio area. Thank god for PB Blaster. And, somebody has had this out before. Among other things, the clip holding down the heater cable was missing.

Question. Last fall the wipers decided to work only if I slammed the driver’s door. Would it be easier to work on that if I did it before reinstalling the heater components? I will probably need to remove the wiper motor assembly. Just curious. A new switch wasn’t the answer.

Brings back memories. Notice I didn't say good ones. Done this job several times dating back to 1984! You have all done a great job of describing the process. I would have added, take lots of photos. Not a big deal here since there are plenty of other reference materials. I just like keeping a record of the work done especially if it has never been tinkered with before. Always had an easy time taking things apart. Different story when it comes to putting things back together. Also, in your case, not a big deal since it sounds like someone was already been in there. No guarantee it was put back correctly. Pull out the AIM.

Regarding your question about the wiper motor assembly, it would be easier to work on the wiper assembly now since you have the backside out. You're going to need to get in there again to remove the wiper motor assembly.
