Re: Selling a Corvette on line

I'm thinking of selling my '54 and considering The Vette Net. Everybody seems to be pushing Bring a Trailer. Any thoughts?

Hmmmm...so the seller doesn't write his/her own description, or is it a case where the staff is trying to be "helpful" by "spicing things up" in editing?

In my experience, they write it and you can make suggestions, but they many times do not follow them. That is why most all C2s with Knock-off wheels are as I described in the ad. From a '66 that just sold a few hours ago....."Turbine-style wheels..."

Your bank has more funds than my bank!

$192k for a silver 1963 FI convertible. Nice car, but I thought that was strong. Well over owner's reserve.

I wrote my add, and they provided some modifications. Since I sold a replica car, the typical constraints of matching numbers and originality didn't apply. The final add closely resembled what I wrote.

Yes, there will always be that one special car that 2 people want and will go to the mat to get it. A sellers dream. I have to admit I was one who just had to have a certain special color '64 1/2 Mustang K-code on BaT, it happens.

Do you sometimes buy sight unseen? If yes, any surprises?

Well, BaT would claim they have so many pictures and short videos of things they are not sight unseen, but of course they are, since nothing replaces a hands on, in person inspection. The aforementioned '64 1/2 Mustang I bought had all those things, plus I asked direct questions about mechanical conditions, like overheating, and got answers like: "not that I have experienced in my short drives".... But when it arrived it had many mechanical issues that the pictures and videos did not address, like overheating, vibrations, gauge functions, etc. Cosmetically it was perfect, but to judge mechanical conditions, nothing replaces an in person inspection.

Yes to both questions. I live in an area where new sports cars were never popular (i.e. "Trucks R Us"). I've been buying mostly "sight unseen" for the last 30 years. There are ALWAYS surprises. In fact, I don't even consider them "surprises" anymore. I just expect to find some relatively minor disappointments every time.

There's really no way to avoid surprises completely. It usually takes me a few weeks to discover all the flaws in an old car, even if the seller was cooperative and I inspected it personally before buying. However, I try to minimize surprises by refusing to buy from any seller who won't clearly answer my questions. For example, hearing "I was told..." from a seller is much worse to me than hearing "I don't know".

The BaT ads are quite a step up from the typical eBay and Hemmings descriptions. Not only do you have more photos, you get to see the questions from other bidders and the answers given by sellers. Most eBay and Hemmings ads just don't provide enough information to justify the high prices that are asked. I also believe the BaT fee charging method limits the shill bidding that's rampant now on eBay.

And as far as buying a car long-distance and sight-unseen at a big auction or from a Craig's List ad... You might as well roll your money into a tube and smoke it.

I submitted an ad to Bring a trailer several days ago but have not heard back yet? I am getting daily auction ads from them?

It can take a couple of weeks.

FYI, you can submit additional photos beyond the 200 (?) initial limit once it has been approved.

Actually maybe more. They decide if your car fits & your reserve. After that it takes weeks to get pictures & get a write up for you to approve. Then more time to get a time slot. Its not fast but neither is a standard auction. I believe their plan is a great place to buy & sell especially when you consider pricing & not having to transport a car to them. Buyer pays shipping. If you are in a state that has NO sales tax buying person to person thats another big plus.
