WOW I have seen destroyed lifters BUT never one like that!
Any estimate on the miles put on the engine since rebuild?James A Groome

I haven't seen this before either.
Perhaps shear failure due to a material defect, and/or repeated torsional load from the cam combined with the lifter sticking in its bore. Just a hypothesis.Mark Edmondson

What does the cam lobe look like? If a piece broke off of it, it likely caused the lifter to wear down like that.
I suspect it took some time to wear, then finally destroyed itself at 5 grand.- Top

Re: 327 Hydraulic Lifter failure (broken)
Update here. Engine was pulled this morning and cam removed. Two pictures below show the damaged lobe. Further tear down of mains and rod bearings showed no wear or foreign material! Gotta love the Wix filter cartridges for these earlier small blocks. I have purchased and installed a Melling 22210 cam and new lifters. Of coarse everything was cleaned up real good before reassembly.
I do have one question concerning the balancer. It is the factory thin balancer and I was thinking of stepping up to a new balancer. Thoughts anyone? As a side note I am now runnning Edelbrock E-Street heads with 2.02 intakes and 1.60 exhaust. Also have a set of 1.6 roller rockers. Flat top pistons at advertised 10:1 ratio. looking for input.IMG_8972.jpgIMG_8973.jpgJohn Seeley
