    E-bay snipers

Buying NOS or good used parts on E-bay I get hit by snipers all the time, or people with more money then brains.
So I'm sticking with 50's Chevy trucks olds ,Pontiac ,T-birds ,Cad and more where I know few people realize many parts are the same parts.

Many times the part numbers are the same for Corvette and other GM parts. I've purshased GTO parts for my '70 such as the pedal stainless.

      Re: E-bay snipers

A friend of mine recently commented that he had attended some judging schools held at his chapter. He indicated there was great emphasis placed by the instructors on the negative aspect of reproduction parts. He further related that judges are being instructed to apply a 50% deduction for repro parts which may contradict the J. G. (?)

If he is correct and this judging attitude prevails I predict this will continue to drive up the cost of "original" parts on eBay and elsewhere.

I am now fearful re: what this means for the $280 I just spent to get the "correct" repro Delco battery for my '65 in preparation for flight judging in early June ? I'd hoped to pick up significant points over my Interstate battery full deduct from last time -

I might suggest that whomever is running your "Chapter Judging School" needs to have an in-depth conversation with the National Judging Chairman to get his head out of his tail end.

One possibility is that the judging school instructors have a lot of original parts they want to sell. So, obviously, they would want to maximize their value. This is one way to do it. I've noticed this "phenomenon" quite a bit over the years. Folks with original parts to sell always seem to be the most die-hard advocates of using only original parts for restorations.

Your battery is subject to standard deduction tables. Whoever is giving out this kind of information at a judging school needs to attend one.

                  Roy,
Is there a recommended X-reference book or web-site...out there that gives truck and passenger car numbers that are same as vettes?

I always prefer an original slightly worn part over a close to correct repro part. Many cases, I see one point deductions for condition on the original parts and one point deductions for originality for repros.

I agree with the both of you, but the original old parts are getting harder and harder to find.

Lol. Thanks Roy. I have a philosophy that when you are determining what direction to take with a particular car, first you have to honestly evaluate what you have. What's original, what's unusual, what's desirable, what must be improved, etc. Quite frankly, you have what you have. It is what it is. Then you try the best you can to preserve what original charactistics are remaining have so many years of use. Afterwards, you do your best to restore to original the areas that are inadequate. That's when you have to make decisions regarding original, NOS, or repro parts.

I'll splurge on original parts if its an area that's not a wear item. For example, I'll purchase a correct 1970 only front grille for $200 to $300 but not an original oil filter for $300. The grille won't wear out, but the oil filter will have to be replaced at some point. I won't purchase a $150 bolt or wing-nut because the repro is only $2 to $5, and it costs only 1 point on the judging sheet.

Purchasing parts for the sole purpose of increasing judging points must be prioritized by the cost per point method with typically the cheapest parts purchased first. Those eBay air cleaner wing-nuts are way down the list when you utilitize my method. lol.

                            Thanks,

                            Stephen

WELL SAID I feel the same and keep looking for real parts then sell the repro.
