Re: paint price shock
You could save yourself most of the expense by doing the prep yourself. I've stripped and painted two cars, one a 67 Vette coupe, and it does take a lot of time, but you can do most of it while you drive the car and take a few months to attend to the problem areas. Once prepped, find someone who will shoot the paint on, unless you are practiced and confident yourself. Also, I've seen quite good work come out of the chain paint shops once the owner did the prep work. If the body is basically good, but the paint faded but otherwise sound, then you merely have to color sand the whole car, using the existing paint as the "primer," attend to the problem areas and prime them, then shoot the new paint on top. Basically, you are using your time to save your money.- Top

Re: paint price shock
This is my 20 year old laquer job I did in my garage. it still looks great but has a patina and only a few minor issues. Was originally Milano Maroon and I am now thinking about sanding this paint as a base & re shooting since I stripped for the last paint job. Not crazy about Milano Maroon (I like maroon) but I should probably go bact to it.Attached Files66 Coupe

Don you have any children you are fond of to leave the car(s) to? If not, please know that I am very adoptable.
Good luck with the paint job....
