    C1 Fuseblock Question

I have purchased a used fuse block for my 57 (to replace mine that I broke). I would like to clean the contact surfaces of the rust. The tabs where the wiring harness connects are not that hard to get to, but the fuse contact points are more difficult. Specifically, I want to clean the inside part of the fuse holder where it actually makes contact with the spring clips on the fuse block.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could clean those surfaces? It is hard to get any sandpaper or steel wool down in there. Also. using something long and slender is hard because the ends of the fuse holders have those little "clips" to keep the fuses from sliding inside of the clips.

I was wondering if there might even be some type of cleaning solution that would remove rust.

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Ashley

Ashley, there are products like Naval Jelly that remove rust, also CLR. You better test a spot on the fiber board before you put on a lot, it could damage the circuit board.

You should be able to carefully pull those clips out of the fusebox from the back side, which makes them much more readibly cleanable--once done, I'd make sure I used dielectric grease on them. Don't take off the finish from the clips--if you do, they'll REALLY rust!

I'll try the naval jelly approach. I'm not sure I'm comfortable with removing the clips. I was thinking I could apply the jelly with a brush and keep it off of the board itself.

Look if you take your time looking under 55-56 Chevy on e-bay you can find them $20.00 to $40.00 NOS stay away from the word Corvette. Many GM cars used the same .

Terminals are made from tin plated brass and will oxide over time. Remove the oxide with a white eraser. Fine scotch-brite will will work, but is more aggressive. Try not to remove the tin plating and expose the base metal. Do not use solvents like WD40...use dielectric grease. this method is specially good for 40 year old connectors terminals also.
