    '71 LT-1 on the Bay

If you guys want a good laugh, check out #120322482238 on the Bay. The ad says that they love to "Chat about old cars". This dude wouldn't get out of his chair to tell me the stamping on the motor, and he's looking to get $150-$200K out of the thing. Wow. If he gets anything over $50K for that thing, mine's going for sale the next day. Forget getting any info out of this guy.....he knows we're on to him. And check out that original interior!!! Apparently this car came without the "Smog Pump" option........Whoah, he just emailed me and told me ProTeam & Corvette Mike offered him $140K for the car and he turned it down. Uh Huh. Gee, I had talked to a gentleman from Corvette Mike who lives just down the road the other day, and he was telling me how slow Terry & C. Mike & everyone is doing due to the economy. Things must REALLY be hot in Pennsylvania!

Re: '71 LT-1 on the Bay

I've been buying and selling cars as a hobby for over 28 years and I still don't get these guys. I learned early on that you have to deal with a lot of "strokers" who have no intention of buying, but you risk losing a sale if you don't at least make some effort. Overpricing is always bad for sales, everybody wants a reasonable deal.

This guy's probably just an old Badger who wants you to be there in person so he can get you on the hook. Either that or he knows that the car is so blocked into his overcrowded showroom that it will take him a month to get it out.

    Nice car, though.

'Know what you mean. A few months ago a guy had a "fully 100% factory restoration and is perfect" 58 for sale. In person the car had a 350 ci 4 bbl engine, mid 60's 4 speed, scratched and nicked 8 year old Roman Red paint, hardtop was white like cove, wrong carpet, pitted chrome, on and on. Previous to viewing he said I don't think them NCRS guys would like it but they don't know nothin' anyway. He was going to let it go for only $125,000.00. I don't think he smiled once.

I think some of these guys just like to stroke their own ego. I go to a number of rod runs and such around east Tennessee. Some many people drive an old car to these runs and put crazy prices on them just to see if anybody is a sucker or to make themselves feel good. I don't believe any of them care if they sale. After I look at hundreds of overpriced cars in a day, I become a bit sick to my stomach thinking that I don't ever want to purchase a collector car again at these prices especially considering the lack of quality. Of course, I awaken the next morning with my renewed enthusiasm.

My friends and I play a game of trying to find the best deal on a car at the rod runs. It makes the day interesting and keeps the prices in perspective.

          Hey Jeremy,

"I really like your post on the NCRS site. You have got all the NCRS people around here laughing at the simple fact that you know basically know nothing about LT-1's other than yours. If you where smart enough to look at the exhaust manifolds, you would see there are no holes for the smog pump. Also, if you do a little more research with out using the ncrs book, you would understand they made a good many non-smog LT-1s for states on the east coast. Also you must not know what to look at in an original interior, because all the key points to look at are still in this car. But you are more concerned about running down someone else's car by looking at pictures instead of looking at the car in person to understand the history and the originality. By the way, I could care less if the car ever sells, it's more fun to list it on ebay and listen to people like you pick the car apart, just to make your car sound better in your own mind.

          Sincerely,
          RJ Sottile"

That's the e-mail I just got from Mr. Sottie. Seems he's ruffled enough to check on us. But MAN, I REALLY want one of those east-coast LT-1's!! No smog....they GOTTA haul complete butt!!! Gee, and here I am spending all this time re-assembling the original smog pump assembly on my Midwest-as-heck ol' gray LT-1.......I'm going to promptly remove it, as it's not necessary. Anybody need a real LT-1 smog pump, hoses, pulleys, etc? It'll be worth so much more, it'll be an east-coast car!!!! And now I must need a new block too, because my CGZ coded block is all wrong...I'll bet his car has a CE, which we all know is what is SUPPOSED to be in these cars.

Please tell me I'm dreaming, and this is all just a joke....

East coast LT-1 with no smog equipment! How did we miss this? Lets get the judging manual updated immediately so this doesn't happen again.

A special message from the auction just for us: Attention: For all the NCRS people in this world, this LT-1 was built without smog. If you look at the exhaust manifolds, you will not see any holes. The car was built for a Pennsylvania dealer and customer! Please keep in mind this was not uncommon on LT-1s for the east coast.

Well, my 71 small block exhaust manifolds don't have little smog holes!!!
                Oh!!! I forgot, it's not an LT-1.

I'm surprised it not one of the three LT-1 automatic built for the east coast with the fuel return line installed. Paul 18046

Re: '71 LT-1 on the Bay

This looks like the same car that was discussed last April 15th, of 2008 on this board, while it was listed on eBay auction #260229669923 (don't try to look up, as eBay is now deleting the auctions after 60 days to help cut down on lawsuits, etc.). The seller at that time had the eBay user id of: gccmc (registered in Missouri), and was extremely rude to anyone who contacted him questioning about the authenticity of the car. A very hateful person, who clearly was trying to "pull a fast one", in my opinion.
My best guess is that this is the exact same car, being re-packaged by another dealer, or possibly by the same dealer's second location.
In is wrong however, to throw all dealers into the same class. I've found used car dealers to somewhat mirror the general population. There's a lot of very, very good people out there, but there's some, that should be avoided at all costs.
The comment from hime "that he turned down $140K from Corvette M, and ProTeam", says it all about this person's integrity. It's a shame that the owners of both Corvette M, and ProTeam don't reply on the TDB, concerning this claim, but perhaps too many negative comments have been thrown around here. Just my 2 cents.

Re: '71 LT-1 on the Bay

Well, this post is certainly entertaining! I just looked at a very interesting car, that would probably have several master level judges here scratching their heads.
A '69 L71 coupe with A/C. This car is owned by thee original owner, currently 59 and purchased new in my small hometown Chevrolet dealership when he was 19! Not a car bought from the dealership lot, but a car he personally ordered in Sept '68 and delivered new in April '69. He spent 90 days installing the factory A/C set-up from another Corvette, even making the exact template and practicing drilling the proper size hole for all the vacum lines to go thru the firewall for such installation.
If you were to see this car (completely unrestored, really driver quality) I would bet most savvy Corvette enthusiasts would swear this car was an L36 or L68 Corvette with a L71 transplant, but the owner who I've known a very long time, since 1970 has all the original paperwork, including the Order Copy still on the tank (he doesn't remember receiving the plastic Corvette owners card) and wanted the A/C to be like factory. An incredible job, to say the least! Very unique, a non power steering, non power brake with that compressor, idler pulley and A.I. R. system, really wild looking belt arrangement.

Re: '71 LT-1 on the Bay

All I know is, this looks and sounds EXACTLY like the "LT-1" I saw go over the block in Kissimmee last January at (insert name here)'s auction...the only thing "LT-1" about it was the hood and the id tag under the shifter. I know that car well because I personally had to jump start the junk so it could get across the block under its own power, and I think it still needed to be pushed. Keith Martin did a little write-up on it in Spring 2008's "Market Report" section of "Corvette Market" . It had no smog, needed door panels bad, and had a CE block. He was kind to the car in the write-up, I felt. Could be a different car....but being that the VIN is such a big friggin' secret, I'd bet it is the same nightmare car...or its twin brother. And I'm going to call Larry over at Corvette M and see if they even know about this junk, just for the heckovit.

"Its pretty fun you guys keep trying to say you have seen this car here there and every where. But unless someone stole it out of our showroom, its been here for over 15 years, and at the original owners house in state college since it rolled off Grabiak Chevrolet's lot where he ordered the car. But at least i am getting a good laugh out of it :-), plus my website numbers are through the roof!

P.S. The codes you keep crying about are V0819CGZ, Oh by the way the car was built in nov. "

August 19th block. Now please keep in mind, that after ALL THIS, he finally answered the 2nd question I had asked him in the first place. He's enjoying the fact that we're all looking at this thing and laughing, so keep it up!!

Reminds me of an statement that Will Rogers once made about Herbert Hoover: "It ain't what he doesn't know that worries me. What worries me is what he knows for sure, that just ain't so".
