Does anyone know of a person that restores the tips other than just plating. What I was thinking is trying to remove the original inlets with a combination of cutting and grinding. Then I would try and fabricate new inlets per originals and weld the new inlets to the tips before having them plated. Maybe make up some type of jig based on another original pair to align the inlet correctly to the tip.

If these tips were not so hard to find I would just replace them. Although it is a real challenge to save them.

Any thoughts? Anyone had the same problem?

    Thanks,

Why not cut the piece from the muffler flush where the beginning of the tip tube. Then at that point, see if you can reduce the outer diameter of a new muffler end to fit where you cut the tip off.

Or, somehow grind out the cut off muffler piece inside the tip being very careful not to remove too much and damage the inside of the tip tube.

Lyndon Drill The Area Where The Spot Welds Hold The Pipe To Tip With The Same Size As The Spot Weld That Should Ease The Removal Of The Pipe From Tip, May Require A Little Heat Once Spot Welds Are Removed.

If the weld is only on the end of the tip pipe I have cut or ground the weld off. With a die grinder and a round burr cut a slot in the old exhaust pipe on the inside. With the slot cut you can remove the old pipe by rolling it out. If the pipe on the tip is still solid this will make the tip ready for plating.

Lyle The Spot Welds Used Fuse The Pipe To The Tip -it Would Make It Easier To Drill The Spot Welds. Grinding The Spots Welds May Make The Job Tougher ,by Drilling Youll Be Able To Make The Job Cleaner And Easyer To Install A New Pipe Directly Into Tip And Weld End, And Replate .

All good suggestions. The guy that welded used a lot of heat and put a bead all the way around where it attached to the muffler and there is a reducer as part of the welded assembly. I did cut them off as close to the muffler as I could.

How do you post pictures? I think they will give everyone a good idea of exactly what they look like.

If the pipe on the tip is solid I would save it even if the length is a 1/16th to an 1/8th inch shorter after you are done. If the pipe needs replaced then drilling the spot welds is a great idea.

Richard Fortier, who advertises in the Driveline, did an unbelievably professional job restoring 2 extra 70 grilles I had. He recently told me he's going to be reproducing these first design tips, which would be a wonderful resource for early 70 owners. I'll try to post some pictures of his finished product if and when they become available.
