What is a spindle knocker? Is this the tool that screws on the threads to use a hammer? That must be a heck of a tool if a 5lb hammer does not damage threads.

The tool is designed so that it threads down on the spindle threads but it SEATS on the shoulder of the spindle splined section at the base of the threads. In this manner, most of the impactive force is applied to the shoulder and not the threads.

As Joe mentioned, the threads are protected provided you bottom the knocker down completely. I think the benefit here is the impact which you can now really wack that spindle with great force. I just disassembled the second side on my 71 and had to wack considerably harder on this one but once you break that hold, you are home free. Good luck, Mike
