Battery replacement

Went out to start my 62 and found the battery with a dead cell. At present what battery will give me the least deduction when judged? Paragon, Antique Auto Battery, Restoration Battery, Corvette central or someone else. I have read many posts and haven't seen a definitive answer.

I've been through this many times. Reproductition batteries suck. Just go to the normal Auto Parts store(s), and buy the best units with the best CCM you can find. Personally, if you want the best, I like Optimas, they're expensive, but worth it.

I use Delco Group 24's in all my "toys" (model #24-7YR); you'll still get half the points as a GM service replacement, and they're reliable. I haven't bought a battery in 8-9 years, and have never had one die. Horror stories abound about the over-priced "reproduction" batteries.

My dated restoration battery is going on 5 years. as long as I keep it wet, it keeps me running. I also have an Optima on trickle standby causr it fits both my cars - top or side.

I bought a Restoration Battery for my 68. Would only start the car when engine cold, not once it warmed up. Bought a regular Delco and starts like a charm every time.
When I called Restoration Battery they told me to call A C Delco which I thought was strange since I bought the battery from Restoration not from A C Delco.
It is in my basement and looks pretty with the right caps, hoses and date code but it is an expensive knick knack .
Cost me over $200; lesson learned.

Guys I've caught this terrible NCRS SICKNESS that I have to have the original or something that is an exact replacment. The car may never be judged by anyone but myself, but it is a 62 and it will have 62 parts, an exact replacement or as close as is available or is affordable.

I think that Antique Auto Battery is currently the only source for restoration batteries. The other suppliers obtain the ones they sell from them. So, I don't think it really matters which vendor you buy it from. However, I'm with John; I wouldn't use one of these things. Ever.

I have used AC Delco batteries in ALL my cars for years and years. In the last 4 years two have developed leaks from the positive terminal -- both were side terminals made by AC Delco. I just bought my first AC Delco that was not made by them -- well actually it is the second if you count the AC Delco that is OEM in the 2008 Corvette. I'm hoping for better luck now that they are made by someone else. It is getting expensive replacing the 00 welding-cable battery cables after the acid leaks into them.

My 63 has an old tar top battery in it that sat on my shelf for 25 plus years in the box with no acid in it. Several years ago it got acid for the first time. No deducts at the shows although the battery has its share of finger nail indents from non believers as I call them. Next time I go to a show I may cover the battery with a sign saying, "yes it's the real deal and please don't touch".
Meanwhile since I have little faith in such an old battery I bought a back up from Restoration battery. The sealed plastic tar top. It's not in the car as I use it on the work bench as a test battery. I am truely amazed that the battery holds a charge for sooo long. When I put the battery charge on the repro it doesn't need much charging. I bought it from our own Tom Kobman from Cincinnati. When the old tar top in the 63 dies though I will use the case for a cheater battery inside. Problem is though those old cases are very fragile and it may just break up into pieces. JD

I learned that lesson the hard way after I paid over $200.00 for a Restoration Battery that wouldn't start my car but it had the correct date codes and battery caps. Looked good and was nice for a coffee table but not so great for a 68 Corvette.
I bought a regular Delco battery and it starts every time.

I am going with Antique Auto Battery. I got between 5 and 6 years out of the last one. I'm trying to see if they date code, but they must be taking the holiday off. Thanks as usual for all the help.

I bought my battery for my 63 from Antique Auto Battery and they do date code the battery. They are great to deal with Good Luck.

Terry (3966) your posting of Delco positive terminal battery leakage was the first I had ever read of this and you had experienced it with two batterys.
I discovered leakage on my 85 Corvette yesterday at the positive terminal. The bolt securing the battery cable is going to take a lot more torque to remove. Did you have trouble removing your bolts?
My 85's battery is an older type Delco that has sealed top. Fresh off the charger it shows 13 volts.
Do you know if the newer Delco batterys still have this positive leakage problem?
I have three other Delco battery side terminal battery equipped cars I am going to now do regular checks on for leakage.

The battery in my 62 Corvette is a Delco 24-60 and it was purchased on Jan 6, 1996 and it still starts the car fine, hot or cold for the past 22,000 miles.
The car is stored in a garage which is kept around 50 degrees in the winter and hot in the summer. I have used a Harbor Freight trickle charger on it for years.
I'm not sure who currently makes Delco batteries but my past experience with them has been great. I just put one in my 57 FI car.
