    OT Airplane Barn Find

It's pretty rare to find a 62 year old fabric covered airplane in its factory original condition. Except for the rotten fabric.

Congratulations on your find. My first experiences flying were in a Cub.

You are in the elite group that owns a plane that has been documented to fly backwards.

Congratulations Rich! A great find! Like Dick, my first experience was in a Cub. You probably know that American Legend Aircraft Co. is mfg. a modern version of the J3 about 30 miles from here, at Sulphur Springs (TX) Mun. Airport (KSLR). When you get her flying you need to show these guys what you have!

      Congratulations again!

It's not mine, sorry for the confusion. I just thought it was cool when I saw it on J3-cub.com.Too bad there's no Bowtie awards for airplanes

I owned a 1946 J3 that I rebuilt many moons ago.....Now I own an American Legend Cub from Sulphur Springs. In fact, I own the first one they delivered, s/n 1003. There are over 160 flying now. I have been to the factory a number of times. They are a great bunch of guys. I flew mine from Sulphur Springs to LI, NY in 2005.

Their web site www.legend.aero has a place for customer profiles. I am on there along with a picture of the license plate on my Z06, which is "CUBPILOT"

I am among the select few that has a car faster than his airplane

Thanks for the story and congratulations on the Legend Cub! The trip to LI must have been great in it.

Everytime I see something about a CUB it reminds me of an article I read in a magazine over 20 years ago.
An owner of a Cub kept his plane at his house. He could not take off in the acft because of the trees. He had a post secured in the ground that he used a lenght of rope tied to his CUB. He would get airborne connected by the rope to the post and fly a circle around the post until he had enough speed and height to release the rope and fly out above the trees.
I believe the magazine was Popular Mechanics.

              WTF

And did it tell you how he landed on his property?

My experience with airplanes, other than my time in the Air Force, is to stand in a long line with a lot of other people at the air plane park, however don't you have to land the air plane first? I think something is bad wrong with that story.

Sometimes airplanes just grow in strange places. A couple of decades ago we lived in Carmel (Indianapolis) Indiana and a friend's neighbor had a two car garage in a quiet neighborhood. In the garage he had a Piper Tri-Pacer (wings off and to the side of the garage) he was reskinning and a Lotus Europa he was restoring. I asked how he was going to get the tri-pacer out of the neighborhood when completed and he said either truck it out like it came in or since he had a wide and long (long enough) street around the corner he would wait until dark and--- He trailered it out.

I did once see most of a Stearman air frame in the basement of a tri-level house -- but I believe those parts left the same way they arrived -- separated.

Am I supposed to be able to see pictures in that thread?
I've tried now at work and at home, and no pictures show up.
Or, as a "non member" are they hidden from me?

I'm pretty sure you don't need to be a member to see the thread and pics. The other thing to try if is to go to www.j3-cub.com and then go to the forums and then the "restoration" section and then the thread on "barn find"

Sorry about that. Was anybody able to see the pictures?

Well airplanes end up in strange places (like rivers), but some cars can fly high enough to hit the roof of a church:

Terry M. there is a procedure that can be done in a Cessna C172 which will permit landing in a very short distance, I saw a Cessna 172 do it one day.

The CUB owner had enough area in his back yard to land but not take off according to the article. The slowest landing speed of a CUB is not very much landing into the wind.

Course a person would not think that a C130 could land on a aircraft carrier, it has been done. How did the C130 take off? The flight deck is only 1092 feet long from end to end.
