    Re: OT Airplane Barn Find

My roommate in college (1960) and his Dad had just finished restoring a J-3 Cub, and he and I flew it on Spring Break from Ann Arbor, Michigan to Tucumcari, New Mexico, then to the Piper plant in Vero Beach, Florida, then to the Piper plant (where it was built) in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, then back to Ann Arbor. No radios, iron-compass navigation, wire-on-a-cork fuel gauge, and the 65-hp Continental never missed a beat.

The CUB owner had enough area in his back yard to land but not take off according to the article. The slowest landing speed of a CUB is not very much landing into the wind.

Course a person would not think that a C130 could land on a aircraft carrier, it has been done. How did the C130 take off? The flight deck is only 1092 feet long from end to end.
OK,.....here's the Corvette technical tie-in......the Corvette was named after a type of fast, US Navy ship.

Good carburetion is fuelish hot air . . .

No JATO on C130 operations aboard CVA59 USS Forrestal which actually has a smaller flight deck (900 feet) than our current carriers 1092 feet. The C130 made multiple landings (21) and touch and goes (29).
Here is the CUB article. It is about half way down on the post.

Here is the video on the C130.

There also used to be an attraction some air shows where a CUB would land on a platform on top of a moving pickup.
