    Only remove/replace the plugs if they're broken. You can install the carpet with the plugs left in place. Position the carpet and glue in place, working your way up to the plugs, roll the carpet back so you can locate the center of the plug. Make a SMALL cut (just a bit bigger that the shaft of the plug) into the carpet and tuck the carpet around the head of the plug....done.
