    Engine painting (authentic look)

If I would like to create a authentic look of the engine paint applied I have to consider the engine was sprayed in a relatively short time by people who did the job all day long.

This means the engine should receive little or no paint in area's less accessible, e.g. behind the water pump. To create this authentic look I was thinking about spraying these area with some clear first paint and then don't make an effort to cover these with orange. Could this work? Has more people tried this and does this work out well (also in the long run?)

Pictures and tips would be welcome...

    regards,
    Rob.

    Re: Engine painting (authentic look)

    Rob,

I've been told that Cast Blast paint sprayed on as a base coat to keep the block from rusting has been done and works well. As far as behind the water pump, that would depend on if you cound find a clear paint that didn't appear too glossy. You might try a form of matte finish clear possibly. I'm sure there will be others who will provide input also.

    Regards,

It was a dirty, not very professionally good looking job. I will post some pictures I have of Barry Holmes 57 Fuel injection car when he pulled the original engine in 1978. These three will give you an idea how little paint was originally applied.

i will PM you the photos as I am having trouble getting more than one up.

Here is a untouched Flint LT-1 engine.
This was removed untouched from a Nova.

          Great pictures --->http://www.chevynova.org/1970LT1_Engine.html

Not a Corvette - but will give an idea of little paint was used, and how sloppy it was.

If you want to paint it with a authentic look? Go out and get drunk and stay up all night then the next day load up your paint gun and paint it like it is not yours and you don’t give a S**T. I am sure that should give you the typical assembly line worker paint job of the period you are trying to recapture.

We desperately NOW need Charts ,photo's, paint chemistry, documentational papers, seminars and I'm sure much much more to cover engine paint over spray to ever receive 100% scoring on the engine. Down with ever driving or starting the engine because heat can change the engine color .Forget PV let see more trailers!
Broach marks and letter size plus the angle isn't enough . I wont the valve covers also removed checking for dates , I know we need this done soon and much much more to get a top flight now.
Sorry guys ! but I just cant get my head around this , people like myself who may drive their Corvette should just stay in the Sportsman class which is ( just a secure parking area ) and for get ever thinking of having a Corvette Judged.

I am so happy that you can at least DRIVE your car Roy. I agree, if it is no fun any more, why do we keep doing it ?

I was real happy to see that they finally judged John Neas 1956 SR-1 in Florida last week. Looks like management realizes there is more than one story to tell.

James ! As you can see we take many trips in our 55 from Ca. The funniest questions we get from people around the country when we've gone to meets is how we got the Corvette there . I tell them we drove it here and we get a surprised look.

I hate to bring this up again but......look at photo 32. It looks like a side view of what appears to be the 2 gussets. Any way of asking this owner?

James, the pics of the '57 FI block look much like my '57 245 block did when I removed it. Yellow, white, discolored, bare spots, sloppy markings, etc.

Good pics Roy! I knew elephants had good memories, but I did not know about the bad eyesight.

Rob, Nobody has mentioned it yet ,so I'll suggest the book Corvette Restoration State of The Art. Published in 1981 by Michael Bruce Associates. It covers the restoration of an L78 1965 Corvette by David Burroughs. The engine section has some nice color photos of the the paint patterns on the origianl never apart engine as it was disassembled for rebuild. The masking and repainting to duplicate the original factory appearance is also dscussed and shown. The book shows up on ebay now and then. There were at least 2 printings, one in hard cover and another in soft cover, so it should not be to hard to find.

Did you not enjoy getting a Top Flight at the National Convention? Come on, admit you can drive your car, have all those accessories on it, and get a Top Flight too.

                              He'll never admit it.
Roy has way too much fun putting on his rants to remember that it's possible to do both. In fact, I think it's possible to drive, get a few Top Flights and even get Bowtie. Just don't tell Roy.

Yes, guy who rants about us debating details in paint coverage is the same guy who also rants about NOS vs reproduction parts, and how no one cars about the "details" with regard to those. Go figure.
