70 Rear Suspension Rebuild?

Well I started out just wanting to do the exhaust system. As I am sure you all can tell from my previous posts I am in the oh by the way mode

What are the pros and cons of installing the exhaust system and going back later to do the rear suspension?

Bill,
All aspects of the rear are accessable with exhaust in place except the differential. Someone may give you a formula for that also, but not me. Even the spring can be extracted around the tubes. Mike

I think you're looking for an out!
You want to be able to say... "they told me I HAD to do the rear suspension while the exhaust was off, honest".
I think Michael is right. But the suspension is so vulnerable now!

While looking at the rear suspension, and knowing the rear wheel bearings just need lubing, among other items perhaps, how about rear caliper shields that need plating, I think they can be unbolted without disturbing rear bearings and spacer clearance, with rotors + shoes off, can this be done? I,m not sure, it's been too many years ago. Steve

You will need to pull the spindle to get the backing plat free.

pulling the spindle will most likely wreck the bearings, so you'll be looking at rebuilding them.

Hi Alan,

You may be on to something

I was not sure but what I do know is that the 70 has 115k miles so I was thinking that since it had never been apart that I might want to consider doing it while the exhaust was removed.

I may wait now just so I can get it back together to drive this summer.

I found a previous post "rear wheel bearing assy" 2008' Joe Luca,s reply, the rear caliper plates can be installed without disassembly of rear bearing unit with rear shoes removed. So, I am correct, as I recalled from years past, this can be done without disturbing bearings and or clearances.
