I've been looking for a long time. Didn't see it on the doors when the panels were off, or behind the glove box when it was out, but today I found it. Bubba painted everything in the engine compartment black so I assumed it would be painted over too, but he was too lazy to go all the way down the footwell. With some cleaning . . . the job number appeared! It's written vertically and I think it is 137 (I know it looks like 131, but in person it looks like it is a 7). It's a good day.

Re: Finally found it!
Rob,
Here is what I found on my 67 AOS car, passenger side firewall. Was just cleaning up the battery damage to the battery tray and frame below, and decided to use a little Simple Green on the firewall.
Funny to find these things. I guess the AO Smith guys in 67 advanced to yellow crayon. It was horizontal.

Re: Finally found it!
Agree with others who said "7". The numbers written on my passenger's side firewall bulkhead were very tall and narrow, just like yours. Probably the same guy that wrote them.....Chris Enstrom

Re: Finally found it!
Rick, my car has a similar thing to yours. The tank stick says one number, and the number written on the car is two digits off. (174 vs 176 I think)Chris Enstrom

Re: Finally found it!
Chris,
My understanding is that the tank sticker/build sheet numbers are different from the numbers on the pass footwell/doors/gas tank area. My tank sticker/build sheet hand written number is 137 which is 2 digits off my VIN which is 135. I bring this up to make sure you are not confusing the two.

Re: Finally found it!
The crayon numbers located on the floorpan, doors, and rear bulkhead will be the same. This number was also on the hood but was painted over during blackout. IMHO this number was assigned to keep track of those parts while in the body shop for fitment purposes. This number repeated every 500 bodies. It has nothing to do with the penciled number on the tank sticker. It appears that St louis used white crayons while AO SMITH used yellow crayons, based on the posted photos.....
In 1967 the penciled number on the tank sticker was usually within 1 or 2 digits of the VIN# and was always ahead. This penciled number also repeated every 500 so if your VIN ends in 345 then the penciled number would be 343 or 344. If your VIN ends in 845 then the penciled number would still be 343 or 344. 845 - (repeat 500) = 345.
