    Things to check.

    Bulkhead connection at the firewall.

    Do you have a green knob battery disconnect ?? If you do, take it off.

    Possible starter solenoid.

    Bad battery cable connection.

    Those are the items I'd check first.

    If the car is an auto, check the nuetral safety switch and make sure the car is in park !

      Dan;

      In addition to what Tom said, I would tap the starter solenoid with a hammer, gently... that is after you check the other stuff he mentioned.

      Good luck,

      Joel

        Plus, don't rule out the ignition switch decided to crawl off and die...

            Check the battery cables at the battery and clean and grease the terminal connections.

            Had the same problem a few years ago. Same night the hood release cable broke followed by an argument with the insurance about flat bedding it home and not on a hook. I won, paid the difference, but they paid most of the tow.

              Before you do anything else. Yoy said you had lights and gauges. Turn the headlights on have someone watch the lights. Then hit the starter. See if the headlights go dim or out. If they do it is the battery or battery connection. This is always my first check, I am a C-2 guy I dont know about late models. Dale

                Since you don't know much about cars I should not tell you about using a screwdriver to touch the small terminal on the starter solenoid to the battery cable connection on the solenoid and see if the starter turns over. With the key on it could start, make sure the car is in park or neutral.
